1978 Raleigh Professional stem question
I want to replace the stem as the current one is not original to the bike (a SR model from Japan). I know the clamp size is 25.4 but what is the tube diameter? one inch? what does 22.2mm refer to?? For some odd reason, the bike has a GB Maes "map of England" handlebar which is not supposed to be on the bike either, but the original owner told me he never changed the handlebar. According to Sheldon Brown, the OEM stem for the Mk V was a GB Biba. Other than the stem, the bike is 100% original. It is a "survivor" bike with chips, rust spots and small dings, but is straight and will remain that way under my ownership.
Thanks, Jeff

My stem is 22.2mm diameter. No idea where they came up that THAT nice round number but that's what many of them are. ISO/British standard I think. I've also read that the Raleigh catalogs were sort of guildelines vs actual specifications. Your Mk V may well have had a SR stem (mine does too - nice stem) and the GB map of England bars - could have been the original build. My Mk IV has some features that are not to spec but bits and bobs that were on the shelves in Worksop at the time and were used. Careful what you take off and replace. Hard to tell what a particular bike's original components were vs what the brochure said many of the bikes were.

Yes I did notice that when I went back out to the shop. 7/8". Despite old Henry VIII the Brits went metric well before us 'muricans did (might, will, may someday, sorta, who knows). Anyway, I know my SR Custom stem is not proper spec but it looks good too and works just fine.
