Nishiki bike indentification?
Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a used bike and am trying to figure out exactly which Nishiki bike this is as the description is rather vague. The title is "Nishiki Century 72," which I assume to be the year and the description says:
"Nishiki century 72? Another number not legable, Avocet touring saddle.
12 speed I believe all is in great working order, you're ready to go for a nice summer cruise. Sell on ebay from similar that I have seen, anywhiere from 250-600. If you can tell what type it is from the pictures please let me know. I acquired this bike in a trade. It is not "hot" just needs your very own custom grip tape on the handlebars!!! And a front reflector. Front brake is a little soft, gears shift nice all lubed and ready."
I'm a little nervous about the brakes, but that's okay, as I'm willing to make some fixes for the price I'm paying. Can you guys help me out here? Thanks in advance!
Here's a copy of the picture:

The photo is of the non-drive side and is too small to see any details. I think the top tube braze-ons for the rear brake cable would make it later than 1972.
Are there any tubing stickers on the bike? Any decals? Serial number? What components are on it? Freewheel or freehub? How many cogs? 12-speed would indicate probably six cogs which would also indicate it's later than 1972.
You haven't provided enough details for us to tell you what you've got.

Entry level bike in poor condition, it would need to be really cheap and you will need to be able to do the rehab and repair work.
No way the bike is a 1972. 1982 maybe. Much better pics would be required. Nishiki brand name did not even exist in 1972.
Typical C/L quote "sells on ebay for $250 to $600" = total crap. First, people mix up ASKING price with SOLD for price. I can ask $100 for a $20 bill. Does that make it worth $100???? Secondly, sellers like this fail to recognize important differences in bikes with the same brand. Heck, a Chevy Corvette and a Chevy Corvair are both Chevys, right? So if I see a Corvette from the early 1960s sell for $65,000, then my early 1960s Corvair must be worth that much. Nishiki is the same way. They made entry level bikes like this one, mid level and even top of the line. Is there a top of the line Nishiki that might bring $600? Maybe. But they would not be anything like this one.
