What is this tab on Peugeot UO-8 seat stay?

My wife's early 70's Peugeot UO-8 has a little oval tab on the left side seat stay. I'm thinking it might just be a mounting point for a taillight. Any thoughts?

As GB said, it isn't a UO8, but he didn't say what it was. That bike is most likely a UO-18, the touring model. It would have been equipped with fenders, lights on the fenders, and a bottle generator on that mount.

It never had fenders or lights or a generator mounted to that tab. I got the bike new out of the box. I posted pics of this bike when I got it and the general opinion was that it was a U-08. You helped me with the date Jim (thanks). It really doesn't matter though because I got the answer I was looking for.

My understanding is the OU-18 is the mixte version. It is the UE-8 that is the touring model with fenders and lights. Here is mine with some upgrades (chainguard, saddle, metal shifters, rear derailleur, tubular wheels):

You may be right. I had just checked randyjawa's MyTenSpeeds to be sure. To tell you the truth, I've never been able to remember which of the UE or -18 designations meant which variant. I suppose I could have even forgotten in the five seconds between looking it up and typing it!

Um, what were we talking about? Some French bike, I seem to recall.

Living in the deep deep south I take hits daily from having grown up in Kalifornia and graduated from Berkeley. But little do they know what it's like to go to the graduate library and handle stuff like the actual minutes of the Academie Francaise at the moment of the French Revolution, Andre Gide's actual autographed books that are easily checked out, and Diderot's Encyclopedie published in the 1700s. It's really tough for being literate here in the deep south.

had this thought as well when made first post. had only seen them on the utility/touring models. decided to let it rest as you are located in mapleleaf land whereas most forum participants seem to be locused austral to you. it may well be that the machines constructed for export to canada have differences from those done for the u.s. market.

in any event, your post has led to a lively discussion of models.

It appears to me to be a misbuild. It is not a standard UO8 and not a UE-8 as unless they were not mentioned there are missing rack mounts, it got by, got painted, could not be a UE-8 so they sent if down the UO8 line. and "no cost extra feature"

Just had dinner in Berkeley on Monday night, 8/11, a few blocks away from North Hall at Great China, Bancroft & Fulton. Excellent food, great prices, bar, reservations a must, even on Monday nights!

Indeed, as the astute and learned colleagues have noted, that is North Hall on the UC Berkeley campus in the background.

@repechage: I'm not sure I follow your comment above. You quoted the photo of my UE-18 (which shows the rack mounts) but perhaps your comment in reference to the OPs bike? The rack mounts are obviously there on mine, but perhaps just out of sight on the OP's blue Peugeot.

@Bledfor Days: Does your frame have rack mounts on the seat stays? There should also be small little bendable tabs below the down tube for securing the lighting wires if it is a UE-8.

@jimmuller: It's worth adding that there is also a UE-18, which is the mixte version of the touring model.

For further reference, borrowed from the excellent cyclespeugeot.com website:

1974 UE-8

1974 UE-18

My comment is indeed that there is not enough of the frame to note the existence of rack mounts or not, if it has them then it was mis-assembled.
If it does not have rack mounts and only a generator mount, then the frame is a misbuild and Peugeot just directed it down a different assembly path.
It would be for the silly Americans, they won't care.

Or Peugeot decided to save money by using one frame for both models.

@gaucho777 It does have the small bendable tabs on the downtube and the rear rack tabs. U-E8 it is. Oddly nothing has been mounted to them. The paint is unmarked.
