The 2015 was in our wine flight last night. It got 2nd low score from me for the reds, lacked fruit and almost watery. I would say unless you want it for the bike themed label, there are better wines and better value from the Willamette Valley. Below is NY Times rating and photo for 2014.

Commuter Cuvee.jpg

Grochau Cellars Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvée 2014, $17.99

"Grochau Cellars is new to me, but judging from this bottle, it’s an excellent source for that rare treat: budget-priced pinot noir from good terroirs, grown and produced conscientiously. Commuter Cuvée shows bright aromas of red and black fruit fruits intermingled with herbs and flowers. It’s fresh, easygoing and ready to drink."

I tried an Eight Point IPA, last week, while in the US, and it might have been even too bitter for me! I think it would sip well though.

I prefer stouts, porters and wee heavy ales. Alas, the shops were out of Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout with coffee, and The Temptress milk stout. So I tried Samuel Adams Nitro Coffee Stout, purchased only after realizing some schmuck had replaced two of the four bottles of Kroger's last carton of Lakewood's "The Temptress" milk stout with diet ginger beer.

Quick impressions.
  • Aroma: Last week's coffee grounds and caramelized burnt yellow pine, with the vaguest hint of Russian Blue cat fart.
  • Mouthfeel: Slimy, with hints of nitrogen widget.
  • Flavor: Astringent mid-tongue hit of Witch Hazel, lingering complex aftertastes of cigarette butts, marshmallow ashes from hastily retrieving s'mores from campfire, and hints of final day at age 29 regrets.
  • Overall impressions: Sam, you're no Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout.
  • Recommendation/rating: This is why we can't have nice things.

Last Sunday, my buddy brought over a growler of IPA from some regional microbrewery - sorry, I don't remember what it was, but it was great.
He brought chips and great salsa, too and we watched Talking Heads 1980 Rome concert - with Adrian Belew on stage.

Dolette McDonnell backing him up - the woman has a horn.

ps - my buddy home-brews Pliny - he buys the ingredients from Russian River.

That Mad Elf stuff looks interesting. A problem I have when I walk into a store with a good collection of beer is I have no idea what most of them are like. A fancy label doesn't necessarily guarantee a good beer in the bottle.

The Mad Elf is very tasty and strong at 11%. It's brewed for a limited time and sells out fast. Highly recommended.

I live 12 miles from Troegs (where Mad Elf is brewed). It's a rich flavored holiday ale with various spices, cherries, and honey......though all of these are subtle.
This beer isn't for everyone and is an acquired taste, perhaps. I love it and I usually like to save a bottle or two and drink them the following holiday season. It ages well in the basement. Also goes well with a backyard fire.

I've made a couple visits while staying at Hershey, never had a bad beer from Troegs.

Troegs is great. I mail some to a friend in Colorado (originally he's from PA) because he can't get it there. As I type this I'm drinking a Blizzard of Hops.

Tasty! ...though I enjoy a Coriolis a bit more. No question that Double Fuzzy is a strong (in flavor+punch) New England DIPA. It has a ...sharp? hop profile, where there is a single distinct flavor that really stands out, as opposed to Coriolis which has a more balanced, rounded hoppy profile (though it's a single type of hop in that one I believe). Both delicious in their own way. If you find 'em, drink 'em!
