Univega Gran Rally

Greetings BikeForums

I purchased a Univega Gran Rally for $100 at the New York Bike Jumble in Park Slope, Brooklyn last week. The bike has all Shimano 600 parts except for the rear derailleur which is a Suntour Honor. The pedals I'm not sure about though. Front wheel's rim is Araya which says made in Japan, and the back wheel's rim is a Mavic which says made in France; both 27 inches.

I would just like to know what year the bike was made (pic with serial below) and if it was made in Italy by Italvega or in Japan by Miyata. I suspect the bike was made in 1981 based on prior research.

Serial number:

My bike: https://i.imgur.com/Crhp4pc.jpg?1?6269 (Pic kept failing to upload to BikeForums, too big maybe?) The U-Lock was not included in the sale.

Also, could anyone tell me if that is the original seat? Any and all help is much appreciated!

Based on description and pic I would say it is a 81 or so Japanes built frame with Tange chr-mo main tubes and Hi-ten rear and fork. What does the tubing sticcker say this will tell you what the actual tubing is. The rear wheel and DR are replcements I would consider the wheel a signifiicant upgrade and the DR a bit of a down grade but actual better functionally than the original.

That derailleur is an add on but might just perform even better than the 600 Arabesque that came on that early '80s lookin' Gran Rally. These are sweet riding & handling bikes, btw.

To my knowledge, once Univega bought the brand they were made in Japan.....somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

And yeah, too large of pics won't upload.

ride_FADCshoryu - Welcome & congratulations on your new bike. Really nice score. Not sure how much bikes usually go for in your area, but in the Portland, OR area it's a "hot" market and they tend to be up priced. You did well. What do you plan on doing with it? Clean it up & ride or ???

Velocivixen

Thank you! It was indeed quite the deal. NYC also has "hot" market, and I was surprised when the guy told me he was selling it for $100 (first sale of the day deal maybe?). I saw lesser quality bikes for upwards of $200, so I estatic when I heard its price and had to give it a test ride! I am already using it for commute in NYC and will slowly clean it up as time goes by. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it so far; nice upgrade from my Diamondback Outlook (2012) which I previously used for commuting.

The Champion tubing sticker and lug details confirm it is likely a nicer Miyata built frame built in Kyoto Japan. Atcually a step or two up from my original asumptions likely full chro-mo double butted main tube and chrom-mo stays and fork. This is why good photos help alot when trying to give info on a bike thanks for actually giving us the photo's. Should make a great all round road commuter these frames where always noted for there exceptional ride quality hope you get a lot of use out of it.
