Batavus is a Dutch bike brand. The name stems from the 'Batavieren', who peddled down the river Rhine (long before BC) in hollowed out tree trunks, and inhabited the swampy Rhine delta by the sea, the low countries, for the first time. As the story would have it!
What the Monte Carlo is I don't know. Batavus made/makes bikes ranging from mass produced touring, mountainbikes to handmade racingbikes and frames. Untill recently there was a pro team sponsored by and racing on Batavus. Some googling will get you alot of info.

Does it look like this?
recently advertized on Craiglist,
wish I could see the components better.
Appears to be mid level bike?

Looks like Huret shifters (so probably Huret derailleurs too), Weinmann brakes, AVA 'Death Stem, and Stronglight cottered crank. Equivalent to a Raleigh Record or Grand Prix, I would think.

Batavus is still around, but they don't have a US distributor anymore and sell only in the European market. They used to import bikes to the US during the 70's 'bike boom'.

Hi all I am new here too. I registered today just to post this message. I also have a Batavus ic " monte carlo" in very good condition, it was given to me. its a 27 inch mens bike and it is a plum or deep purple color. it does not have silver all the way up on the forks . it has the words grand prix on the seat. and black and white diamond applicas around parts of the seat steam and front bar. it has the words "Monte Carlo" along both sides of the cross bar I cannot find a serial number on it but it has the words wienmann 750 and vanqueur 999 on the brakes. on the front of the bike is a emblem of a big letter B with two lions facing in opposite directions, underneath that is a man carrying a musket or rifle?
I just wanted to let tjocesq know that I have the same bike that he has and if nothing else at least we can attest to it being a batavus monte carlo. and hopefully come up with some more information about it. one thing I am sure of this was not built in the year 2000, more like 1970's. but thus far you are the only one who inquired about the same bike I have inquired about. and I've been all over the net looking for it.
I have looked all over the internet for more information on this bike but I can't even find a picture of one. in the "monte Carlo series.

Hi, Wanda:
Welcome to C&V. The thread you posted in was five years old so the original poster you responded to is not likely to see your message. But there are several threads about the Batavus Monte Carlo here, and lots more out there on the internet. Try googling "Batavus Monte Carlo" using quotes like that. You'll even find pictures.
I just started a thread about that very bike in this forum a few weeks ago, it is in the 'appraisals' subforum. My neighbor found one in his attic, couldn't even remember if it was his. I sold it for $80, as-was, but in actually pretty decent shape.

You are correct, it's a 1970s bike, and it was a fairly basic bike then. There is a Batavus catalog from the early 70s available on velobase.com which shows this model. Nicely lugged frame, but relatively heavy construction and mediocre parts. So, IF cleaned up, adjusted, cables and all rubber (tubes, tires, brake pads) replaced, it will be a perfectly good 'ride around the neighborhood' bike but not very a. valuable or collectible b. fast.
