Got my hands on a old Basso Gap.
Needs serious painting. I just have an old Cr-Mo competition fork (donīt ask me itīs brand name), a couple of campy brackets and cinelli stem. Should I invest on this Frankenstein Bike? Any sugestions? Havenīt got much money. All parts needs some cleaning, but theyīre all good. |
If you are doing the work yourself and enjoy scrounging parts on eBay and at yard sales, go for it! If you plan to pay full retail for parts and to contract out most of the work, it will indeed be a money pit.

Another option to consider is the comonentry. I've collect a
fairly nice Super Record Gruppo for a Trek I'm going to rebuild. The components are not all the same year, and they are not NOS or pristine. The bike is going to be a rider so I don't care if they all match. I probably spent less than $150 for the gruppo on e-bay. Marty |
You all are right. I having most of the job done by the guy who gets me the parts. And since Iīm buying old spare parts from him, heīs being nice on the service price (sometimes no charge at all).
Iīm not a pro rider, and the bike is going to be made out of fine (old, not matching, ok) parts. So I guess itīs going to be a nice bike for me. Thanks for making me consider these things. |
I put together an 80s Basso. I enjoy the ride immensely. Don't forge the classifieds at Campy-Only.com when pars hunting. I found a complete S Record (included wheelset, seat post, headset, pedals in addition to the usual drivetrain components for either $200 or $250, don't remember for sure.
Bassos don't get alot of credit but ride very well. |
