Extremely weird 52t chainring

Found this while sorting the chainring shelf at our local bike co-op. All of us are stumped. Anyone know what this is?

What's the BCD? If it's 144, then I'd bet that's a Dura Ace 10-Pitch ring (custom?).

Just a guess, but could it be a home-brewed triplizer setup where a third chainring is added to the outside of a dual chainring setup, in place of a chain guard, perhaps?

The BCD is way above 144. I'll guess it's somewhere around 185 mm. The holes are so close to the edge I don't believe you could bolt it to a ring any smaller than 52t; 51t or maybe 50t, just barely, but that hardly makes sense. Maybe this was made to be attached to an even larger chain ring, perhaps for a recumbent or other bike with small wheels.

+1. It looks like a finer tooth pitch could be throwing off the perspective. @Wisco, try laying a regular 1/8" chain on it or measuring the tooth pitch to find out.

I had a Silstar crank once that had an impossibly large outside BCD (180+), paired with a 118 inner ring BCD. Odd duck. Also had a bashguard. I removed the big ring, left the guard ring and used the inner mount for a single speed.

Similar to this thing (not mine):
