Beautiful!!! Very Unique Lejeune

I was fooling around on this Velo Ciao site, Gios Super Record Model II (1978) | velociao that is a link in the Gios restore thread. Lots of beautiful bikes but this took my breath away. This 'cross machine is stunning.

Lejeune Cross Special | velociao

Thankfully it is only a 53cm. The price looks to be 1,200.00 EU.

Because it's the ugliest paint I've ever seen?

That's what makes it unique. It's period correct. If it had a solid color or something similar it would be just like every other bike.

That's one way to think about it. The other is that with a repaint it wouldn't be so ugly.

vintage looking cross bikes aren't really that common actually. That said I had a Guerciotti that looked similar to this (minus the ugly paint) however it could barely fit 28's, so I sold it to #fender1 , who sold it because it barely fit 28's.

That is an extremely rare LeJeune Tazmanian Tiger model. I heard they were extinct!

Bianchigirll, if you like it that is all that matters. Don't mind all our silliness.

re you sure it was converted from a road bike? I think a lot of the '80s bike were intended for tubular cross tyres so that may account for the lack of clearance.

Very true. and as they say 'beauty is in the eye of the bourbon sipper' or something like that.

Well, not quite "just another bike" but the paint does really smell like poo, in my poor opinion. For the same reason, this Proctor=Townsend turned me off because of the gaudy paint...

As did this near mint old Sekine MR300...

But of all the bikes that I have been lucky enough to own, this Tommasini, in my opinion, had the worst paint job and it was the paint that caused me to sell the bike...

All that said, I would love to have such a bicycle, just the way it is. The bike is a beauty and, for what it is worth, I am a LeJeune fan, to say the least.

I'm sure it was meant for tubulars (and no, it was a purpose built cross bike). That said I don't know how that accounts for lack of clearance. They just wanted to keep a tighter race geometry and didn't use larger tires like we do today. That would be my guess.

If unique means one of a kind, then this is exactly one of a kind, and there are no others.

So very unique must mean that there is not merely 1.0 of a kind but actually 1.0000000 of a kind.

Or something.

From dictionary.com:

"Many authors of usage guides, editors, teachers, and others feel strongly that such “absolute” words as complete, equal, perfect, and especially unique cannot be compared because of their “meaning”: a word that denotes an absolute condition cannot be described as denoting more or less than that absolute condition. However, all such words have undergone semantic development and are used in a number of senses, some of which can be compared by words like more, very, most, absolutely, somewhat, and totally and some of which cannot.
The earliest meanings of unique when it entered English around the beginning of the 17th century were “single, sole” and “having no equal.” By the mid-19th century unique had developed a wider meaning, “not typical, unusual,” and it is in this wider sense that it is compared: The foliage on the late-blooming plants is more unique than that on the earlier varieties. The comparison of so-called absolutes in senses that are not absolute is standard in all varieties of speech and writing."
