I ride a bike like this all the time when on cooking duty . Except the one that I use has a lockable headset and a bipod kickstand under the BB, which is a great set up for parking.

I saw a couple of mamachari bikes on the local market two years ago but didn't have the money to grab either of them. (They have room for huge baskets on the front and feature a bipod kickstand like the one on the bike you posted.) I haven't seen any since 2012- one of those was even pink - but maybe I should put money in my savings account in case I do see another one so I won't miss out this time around.

Would I ride a woman's bike? Only if she'd let me. I guess that depends on the woman.

I want to see this attempted on a regular basis in the wild.

wut? I'd never heard this before.

Actually many of us tandem captains swing our legs over the handlebars all the time. Very poor form to kick your partner while mounting the bike...

Stopped by a LBS today. While browsing some used bikes and an older gent started a conversation about his need for a woman's 3 speed type bike. Was recovering from a broken pelvis, caused by a bike accident. A top bar was too much for him. Hated the mountain bike knobby, fat tire beach cruisers just wanted a practical road going tire bike. Made perfect sense to me

nowadays the wristwatch is kind of a phallic symbol.
I don't consider a watch a phallic symbol, but I see the point, what with monster watches, and ye old '70's big leather watchbands...
It does beg the question, is a hanging pocket watch a symbol of something near and dear to a phallic symbol?
(now that's a hanging participle!)

My riding mower is a step-through, so if you want to get into the old "whose is bigger?" situation, I remember a time when the riding mower was considered a "compensation piece."

Then again, I don't wear a watch.

As for a "woman's" bike, I swore I'd never get a sloped top tube bike, but I have two.

I like mixtes, a lot.

My first bike was a unisex.

One of my next bikes will be an XtraCycle.

So yes, I'd ride a woman's bike.
When my hips/back won't let me swing a leg over.
When "standover" vs. balance becomes threatening.
That will be the time.

And for those who would tease me about it, well, I'll be old and pride will have goneth.

^^ Yeah! Better get that lady's step-through right away, Ramona, and get that unintended transformation stopped. It will also help if you get a wicker basket for the handlebars.
- And whatever you do, DON'T WEAR A WRISTWATCH!

(I know this 'cause I read it somewhere in the interwebs, so it must be true. )

Oh, please. Any guy can pull of riding a step-through or mixte frame without their manhood being called into question. It's really not as much of a statement as some of the "I don't believe in gender roles" camp is making it out to be.

Want to REALLY prove you're secure in your manhood?

Ride this bike:

wearing this:

Gender roles be damned, right fellas?

What do you think, abandon ego and enjoy the ride?

Go for it.

There are a few WSD, Women Specific Design, bikes. I own a 2006 Trek Pilot 1.2 that carries that designation. It might have a tweak here and there for a woman, but it certainly looks and rides like any modern bike, and nothing overtly girly about it.

Would I? Sure. Low-step models are easy to use, easy to live with. Only risk is my imagined thought of what others might think of me. IMO, problems with that sort of thing went out in the '70's.

Yes, the Japanese term is Mamachari, but over here in the Netherlands we call them "Omafietsen" - granny bikes - even though most of the grannies have moved on to electric, pedal-assisted bikes these days. There are a few companies importing them now stateside, under the omafiets name.

A pink Mercier would be a wonderful find. I do notice though, you are missing a pink ladies step through beach cruiser. When do you plan to add one of those to your collection?

I completely understand. That's how I feel about mixte and step-through frames. Nothing to do with gender, just find them to be ugly in their design, as functional as it might be for some.

Understandable, but you would ride a cruiser? Just curious as step throughs and cruisers are similar, but I myself don't like women's cruisers...

I am attracted to vintage tank cruisers. The one I posted is certainly not an example of that.

Something more like this is right up my alley though.

2 touring cyclists from Sweden last November, had started in Anchorage AK, they were already down as far as the Pacific Coast, on their way to Florida.

they were touring on step thru commuter bikes with an 8 speed IGH.. damn sure they were easier to get On and Off than one with a Top bar up High.

my 2 favorite bikes now have Low top bars , a BikeFriday And a Brompton,

but as steel is gender neutral they don't try to seduce my regular diamond Frame boys Bikes ..

Very cool, I'm still on the hunt for whatever cruiser I want.. I think I'd like something prewar though, though it's a bit of a pain to find a non womens frameset from that era at a decent price.
