Any fellow fans of Mavic components out there?

I am trying to complete this group (photo attached) and only missing: seatpost, stem & bar.

Ambitious!

Nice group, and you can fry eggs in the morning using the crank. Mavic, they think of everything!

Reynolds 753 10-23-14 04:54 PM

I went in thinking it would take a lifetime to complete and perhaps it will with the few remaining items. I got off to a good start, finding the rest within 6 weeks time.

Italuminium 10-23-14 04:58 PM

funny how that regular handlebar looks from a totally different era. Which it is, off course. Mavic must have been the king of the rebrand at that time.

I can't help you, but I am a fan. I have a set of MAVIC 500/550 hubs on my Jack Taylor and I love 'em! Spin smooth as silk.

I'm surprised they weren't the first to make an anatomic handlebar. They re-engineered just about every other component.

Take the torque wrench off your wallet, as it's gonna take quite a bit of money to get those missing Mavic items, especially in any kind of good condition.....:D

jyl 10-23-14 06:41 PM

Mavic seatposts show up every now and then, $100+.

Bars and stem ditto.

Nice stuff! I'm amazed you got the pedals. I've never seen them.

Antieverything 10-23-14 06:47 PM

I have a Mavic stem (110mm) and bar (400mm). I will let you know if I ever decide to sell them.

embankmentlb 10-23-14 06:56 PM

I didn't know Mavic had a cassette hub in those days. I am more of a fan of the Mavic group that this replaced. You can't argue with the petigree. 1989 Mavic won both the Tour & the Worlds.

KonAaron Snake 10-23-14 06:58 PM

I think I have the post...it might be a goofy size.

Edit:

I have one in 27. I think it's NOS with a tiny bit of shop rub...at worst it's excellent condition. Uncut.

Ecrevisse 10-23-14 08:24 PM

I have a 2000 Rivendell with all Mavic components of different years. I like the older years with Simplex retro-friction shifters and "erector set" style rear derailleur.

I took me years to find this stem and bars. The bars were very expensive.

There are two versions of the crank. 631/1 and 631/2. The /2 is lighter. You can recognize it by the shorter, stubbier arms.

Those pedals are sometimes referred to as Mavic's "Lego" pedals because of their blocky shape and the big yellow plastic section they have at the bottom and back of the pedal...... They regularly appear for sale at eBay in all sorts of shape and NOS. Many sellers ask for the moon for NOS ones, but I did notice a couple of NOS sets recently go for not too much money because mostly they did not have their original boxes or the boxes were a bit torn up, so there's still a chance for us C&V cheapskates to snag a pair of these cool Mavic pedals..... It kinda gives one an idea who's paying big bucks for them....Mostly NIB collectors I guess.

I've got the bullhorns if you want them!

I love Mavic!! The hubs especially. I have the piste, freewheel, and cassette versions.

I'm missing the blasted seatpost. Some jive turkey has one on ebay right now for $249.

Yes, the hubs make my mouth water:

The hubs are really good. I have the 500 hubs on my daily commute bike. 4 years of riding every day, usually in rain. The hubs are so smooth.

But . . . anyone know if the bearings are available? Or have experience re-greasing them? Someday, mine will need it.

noglider 10-24-14 05:29 PM

Use Google Alerts to find new listings of stuff for sale.

rccardr 10-24-14 09:54 PM

I think I have a set of the bars...the traditional drop with 26.0 clamp section? If that's what you're looking for, let me know and we'll work something out.

edit: yep, I checked. They are model 351 bars, traditional round drop, in OK shape. Some scratches, but shiny.

I'm pretty sure the bearings are standard-size cartridge bearings. You'll need a pin tool to get the outer cap off, but then they just press out. Take them to an industrial bearing supplier and they'll say "Sure, Mac, we've got those. How many thousand do you want?" An alternative would be an auto parts store- they're commonly used on car alternators.

Citoyen du Monde 10-25-14 12:28 PM

I too have a set of bars and a stem. The stem is 110 mm and the bars are 40 cm C/C with a criterium bend. They are for sale.

i have three sets of MAVIC pedals sitting in the parts bin. All used condition but one set is pretty nice. I standardized around these pedals before finally moving to Speedplays about 2 years ago. I'm not a weight weenie but the weight savings was like 200grams....
