Hello - can anyone tell me what I have Bottecchia

Hello everyone -

Can anyone tell me a little about this bike ? It is a Columbus tubed (SL) Bottecchia - I am guessing around late 80's - 90's ? I do not have the bike in my possession yet. By the picture it appears to be a 52 or 54 cm frame. I am fairly certain it has Campagnolo wheels, but the rear derailleur is a Sachs Huret Rival, I am not sure if it is original.
?
I wanted to know - what year is this bike, my guess 1990 or 1991? What was the original equipment ? and of course value when new and estimated value now

My plans for it are to fix it up - it may be my indoor bike in the winter for rollers - with protection against rust on the tubes of course. I needed a small frame to ride my rollers comfortably - and of course it is a new part of my budding collection - been wanting an Italian frame for many years now.

Thanks In advance !

Good Morning. Sorry you were disappointed by lackluster response but posting at 10pm this time of year may not get the fastest response. Looks like your post did have 170 some views but perhaps lack of information about your bike and location may be part of the cause.

Can you post a few more pics? Maybe a good pic of the Columbus decals? Where is the bike located?

These bikes, like many other highend bikes came as frame/fork and the buyer was free to build it how they pleased. The importer may offer different 'kits' but you can do what you want. The catalog pic referenced is indeed a SL/Chorus bike but since the same frame could be had with C-Record or Athena that doesn't mean your bike is automatically a SL/Chorus.

Due to the prevalence of the SACHS components I suspect this is a European market bike. Are the hubs Campagnolo or just the rims?

Very interesting Bianchigirl - (by the way - I also picked up something you will be interested in this week - I will post pics as well)

- I do not have the bike/frame yet - it is still in the mail - hopefully arriving soon - but in the other pics I noticed it does have the Columbus SL sticker. The catalog form 89 doe snot list this as a frame you can buy separately. It only has the SLX and TSX models as separate. Maybe it is from Europe - the seatpost in the picture also looks like Sachs, since I have the same one on an old Falcon from the same years (late 80's) as well.

I will let you know hwo this turns out when the bike arrives. I have two bikes in the mail now - so I am waiting for them to arrive with fingers crossed, in hopes they arrive in one piece.

I just noticed in the picture it does not have internal brake cable routing - the bike I purchase does - I will continue my research

Because it has the rear brake cable routed through the top tube, I would suggest it is probably late 80's (after 1987). When you get it, look at the championship years printed on the frame decal on the down tube. Unless the decals have been replaced, it's a cinch the bike was made after the latest year shown on the decal (1985, 1986, or 1989). Looks like a nice ride. Enjoy!

OK - I think I have narrowed it down to [h=1]1991 Bottecchia Professional SL -[/h]
Based on a picture I found - the decal locations also match what is in this picture as well as the internally routed brake cable.

I would be willing to bet if you wanted a SL Bottecchia frame only it was available.

Great looking bike but I think Ergos and DP brakes (at least Campi's) didn't debute until '93? This is a pretty classic paint scheme from Bottecchia so you may never be able to pin down an exact year.

OH BTW if you do not know the story of Octavio Bottecchia you need to sell this bike straight away.

Great looking bike.

yes - I bought - it is in my post office now - hoping it makes it to me in one piece. Bianchigirl - I definately know the story - and I remember reading about it back in the late 80's as well. The picture of the Professional bike above- has been modernized, the caption for the picture labeled it as a 91. Looking at the details - I think I am right - I will post pics when it arrives - assuming the post office does not break it first.
