sand in my wheel?
I recently serviced my rear wheel.
Applied new grease on the hub. After I was done I noticed when I spin the wheel it sounds like sand is falling through the wheel. I removed the rim strip, cleaned it and still hear that noise. I find it hard to belive that its the hub since I just cleaned it. Could it be the tension of the spokes? Damage to the rim itself? I don't know how long its been doing this I didn't notice it until I service the hub. I serviced the front too but there's no noise there. Anybody have any guesses on what could be causing this. |
Did you just add grease or remove the old bearings, clean the cups, and replace the bearings? It may be some grit of some kind between the hub and axle.

rust from spoke-hole eyelets?

Applied new grease on the hub. . A proper overhaul involves: disassembling the hub, removing the axle and cones, cleaning and inspecting the cones and hub races, reassembling with new bearings and grease, and proper adjustment of the bearings. If you skipped any of those steps, you could have missed what's causing the noise. If you did all that and it's still noisy, I would suspect one of the bearings is out of place and is stuck between the axle and the hub shell. |
I cleaned the cups and added new grease.
Used the same bearings. Also I removed the QR and cleaned that and the inside of the axel. There's some some kind of calcium or whatever builds up on aluminum on the spoke nipples It's really noticeable when I put it back on the frame and spin it But when I spin it in my hands its not very noticeable unless I do it slowly. It's sounds like sand is moving on top of the rim I feel that its coming from the rim but the sound could be traveling through the spokes from the hub |

This is confusing. How did you "apply" new grease to the hub?

I'm going to take it apart again maybe a bearing did fall out of place Because it did take me a little longer than usual to adjust the cones to where there was no play and it spun freely. Thought I was having an off day |
Spokes are not usually hollow so.....
Do you ride in sand? If you have a double walled rim it is possible that some sand has worked its way into the rime through the nipple holes and the around the valve stem. |
I know exactly what you are talking about. i have had this problem with a few sets of wheels.
Not sure how to fix it exactly. I just live with it, you shouldn't hear it when you're riding. Strange though...I assume rust inside the rim between the spoke hole eyelets. |

I can't believe I over looked this. The rim is double walled. I haven't ridden on the wheels They're from a project I recently acquired. The previous owner left the bike out for over a year, I'm sure some dust got in there somehow. Thanks for your input |
