Looking for a Spindle to replace pitted cottered Peugeot.

I'm fixing up a Peugeot UO-8 for my significant other and I've run into some pitting on the original spindle. I had wanted to just replace the bearings, re-grease and slap the cottered cranks back on, but now I need to find another option. The cups are in decent shape, with only one very, very, very small pit on one side, so I should be able to reuse them, I just need to find a spindle. Mr. Sheldon states that a 5 series japanese spindle should fit, I can get a Tourney crank set for about 20 bucks, so that might work if I can find the japanese spindle. The other option is to find another peugeot cottered spindle, put it in and pretend it never happened. The issue I have is, I can't find either.

So, does anyone have, or know where I can get either one of these?

Go to your nearest bike coop, old spindle in hand, and buy a replacement that is dimensionally the same. Maybe more likely to find a square taper, but running across a cotter spindle isn't impossible.

Another option is to replace the bottom bracket with new sealed cartridge and cotterless cranks. Check out Velo Orange:

Another option: Replace the bottom bracket cups with thicker-walled French threaded cups like the "Action" branded ones Harris Cyclery has been carrying. Then you can use a common 3-series spindle instead of z 5-series.

^^This. Our local coop keeps an ample supply of both pottered and square taper on hand.

Post the measurements of what you need here and I bet someone here will send you a cottered spindle for the cost of shipping. I know I have several in my parts box that I will never use and would love to find a home for.
