Old Trek fit
I am pleased with the fit of my old Trek (1977). I would like to know if any of you more experienced C/V folks could suggest other bikes that offer similar qualities?
I would like to start on a new project, but lack hands on experience of evaluating multiple Marques to narrow my search. I have owned several Treks 1977-1984. All 22 1/2" frames. I'm looking for a quality sport/touring configuration. Thank you for your insight. |
So you've got a 77 TX900?
That's going to be Trek's 70s "racing" geometry- it's pretty much a touring geometry with shorter chainstays. What's really nice is that Vintage Trek has all the catalogs, with all the geometry charts- so you can compare other bikes' geometries. |
Schwinn frames of Columbus Tenax tubing or if you get real lucky a Schwinn Pelaton with Columbus SL. Voyageur, Super Sport, Tempo and Prelude from the 1980-1989.
Motobecane Grand Touring, Jubilee, Grand Record. Miyata 610 and higher numbered bikes. I often search by terms as Reynolds 531, Shimano 600, or Campagnolo, but often the sellers who know the good stuff will also ask more than the sellers who think all Shimano is the same. |
Sport touring? That kind of geometry is rather common in the Vintage world. What strikes your fancy? Some Italian? French? British?
It's really hard to not own more Treks. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h8...017F0CBF15.jpg |
Buy more lugged Treks, they're awesome, and highly undervalued.

Steel Merckx with century geometry.

edit - maybe i should be on the lookout for the right model in the right size. |
Yes - my years/models of interest are in a relatively narrow band, thanks to experience and this forum.

Raleigh is another company to look at. The Gran Sport, pre-GS Competition and the International are near what you're looking for. Of course, a Trek sport tourer will most likely be less expensive than those Raleighs. I'm often surprised how inexpensive the 500 and 600 series Treks still are and they are very nice bikes.

Thanks to everyone, some good ideas here. I don't have to be convinced to buy another Trek, I'm a believer, however it's all I buy and thought I might be missing something.
Yes, my bike is a 77 tx900. Actually I have 2. My only bikes. I do that so I can ride every day. They are not restored so not much to look at. I like friction so they both are equipped with Suntour Superbe. This is is a very nice forum. Thanks for letting me play. |

My rides these last few years are mostly less than 2 hours, so I've migrated the vintage toward racy bikes with tubular wheelsets. |

Now a 770 should drop into your lap. :D |

Thanks, nice ideas. I'll try to post something newer and better executed.
