Help Identify a Peugeot!

Hello!
I am reaching out to anyone that may help me identify the model, year, and any other useful information about this bike. So far, I've had an enormous joy riding this bicycle, and it has led me to build a much stronger interest in it. And yes, for those who are wondering, it is a half-assed single-speed conversion... I had no choice but to convert it due to some personal reasons. Also, the most biggest question I have is: How can I identify what kind of threading the main components are? (Stem, pedals, hubs, etc) I would appreciate it if anyone could provide me with some answers pertaining specifically to this bicycle. Thanks in advance! I also want to apologize for my very limited knowledge in bicycles, and hope I did not offend anyone for any matter! -ESK |
Low end, mid 80s. Probably a UO-8.

There may be a white paper sticker on the left side chain stay, which has a serial number on top and something like PH8 56cm on the second line. You have a model form about 1982-1983, Carbolite 103 frame, with what appears to be a replacement chrome fork. Catalogs online
As far as threading, I wouldn't worry about it unless you have worn components or need to repack the bearings in the bottom bracket, the only issue being is whether you have the right crank puller if it is a TA or Stronglight, but probably a Nervar, which uses a standard puller. I have refurbished a lot of French bicycles and frankly the component quality is very good, usually they can be reused with cleaning, polishing, new bearings, and grease. As a noob, I would suggest you find a local bike cooperative and enroll in a maintenance program or let them help you make determinations on threading. |
Welcome, webmints! You're not the only one enjoying the pleasure of riding a Peugeot. Low end French bikes, especially UO-8s, are well-loved by their owners, and many of them frequent this forum. If you google 'site:bikeforums.net UO-8' you'll find more information than you can ever hope to remember. :)

Yep, nothing wrong with those Carbolite frames. I've got one and I'd ride more often if it was actually my size.

Nice bike but not a UO-8 with sidepull brakes and lugless frame. Oddjob got it right, it's probably a PH8.

Could have been upgraded slightly with a chromed fork, as even my PH10 from around that time did not have such.
If the fork is indeed not original, make sure you check the top tube and down tube neat the head tube junction for any signs of buckling from a crash that might have made it necessary to replace the fork. Bike would have most likely came from the factory with Simplex ratcheting stem shifters. Bar-end shifters would really work nicely with this bike if you decide to go with multiple speeds again, as there are cable stops already brazed on to the top of the down tube. It is a very good riding, solid bike, despite it's entry level position in Peugeot's lineup at that time and will take very well with some well thought out modifications and upgrades. Hint) Start with getting better/lighter wheels than what might be on it. Changing out wheels is the biggest improvement you can make and feel on a bike like this. Enjoy the French ride! |
Simplex stem shifters ratchet? I must admit I've never seen a set in person.
