ALAN book

Apparently, there's a book coming out in a few weeks about the history of ALAN.

Bad translation of the blurb (maybe Citoyen du Monde can help here...)

Told for the first time in a book, the triumphs and successes of ALAN, a smal company, based in Saccolongo in the province of Padua, since 1972, that has written important pages of the history of Italian and worldwide cycling and came up with revolutionary ideas on road bike construction, introducing new materials and experimental and original techniques for the production of frames.

Today, all manufacturers in the world produce aluminium alloy and carbon fibre bikes thanks to this small business that, with bravery and perseverance, dared to open up new avenues in the universe of professional cycling.

Amongst the champions that have raced and won on ALAN frames we count at least Zilioloi, Basso, Bertoglio, Vandi, Gavazzi, Baronchelli, Beccia, Bettaglin amongst the Italians; furthermore, Thevenet, Kuiper, Lejarreta, Parra, Luccion Herrera, Johansson; in cyclocross Vito di Tano (two times amateur world champion) and Pontoni, and amongst others Zweifel, Wolsholl, Stamsnijder, Thaler, Kluge; and finally by the pistards Golinelli (two times wearer of the rainbow jersey), Brugna, Villa, Clark and Risi.

I'm assuming it's in Italian so it'd just be a picture book for me.

Thank you very much for the information and the heads up on the book!
Don't know if it will make my X-mas gift haul, but I'll try!:thumb:

If it's available in English then it will be on my Christmas list, my 1980 Alan Super Record is always a pleasure to ride and finding out about the manufacturer would certainly be something I would enjoy learning about

hi pardon the slight thread hijack . I have been trying to figure out what makes a super record a super record ( if you get my drift? )

have a very similar frame to above ( rather cosmetically challenged though) stamped on seat tube ALAN1082 . Has a flattened top tube .

Any info gratefully accepted

Cheers

I don't have an answer for you, but I know the machined dart shape depressions on the sides of the lugs that your frame has are a big plus.....:thumb:

1082 is the date stamp which indicated your ALAN was built in the 10th month of 1982

Yes the machined dart shape depressions on the side of the lugs are an indication of the Super Record
from what I've been told the Super Record was built with slightly different tubing which gave a stiffer ride, whether this is true or not I can't confirm as I've never ridden the Record model to compare

For an interesting short youtube clip about how these bikes are screwed together CLICK HERE

Below are a couple of early ALAN adverts that I have come across

They were interesting bikes. If they had been willing to increase the tube diameters here and there they could really have been dominant.

Looks like from the intro to the book lots of champions rode Alan bikes. Sounds like a successful business to me.
I know of a lot of companies that avoid being dominant, they just want to build neat things, or innovate or stay quirky, or ...???
Maybe I should read the book.

Got to love the tube on kerb and then jump on it ! ouch !

Also note there is no mention of the oval top tube ? Perhaps a later improvement?

Appreciate the information
