39 Paramount #A702
Another member posted this bike on the Craiglist thread last week. I want to eventually have a Paramount track bike from the 30's, 50's, and 70's; two down one to go. Its going to take some time to gather parts so in the meantime its back in the box and off to Waterford for paint.

Nice score! For its age, the paint is in really nice condition. Or has it been repainted in the past, and thus the world championship decals on the seat tube? Do you have the original headbadge?

Just curious...why the 30's, 50's, and 70's? Do those decades hold some importance, some special meaning to you? Just wondering.

Captain Kangaroo says, "Schwinn bikes are best!" Very nice find.

Cool, I would like to see the build up for sure.

The bike was repainted in the 70’s. When I pulled the fork I could see what looked like white paint overspray high on the fork tube so the bike is going to be painted white with the red, white, blue, and gold stripes like this ad from 1940.

No head badge unfortunately, or anything else for that matter, this one is going to take a while to piece back together.

Hello Sir_Name, Painting will be done by Waterford, the build will be as period correct as possible as parts are found. That said, if I can’t find the exact stuff I will substitute appropriate replacements. Maybe some hubs from the talented Mr. Odom.

Hello Essthreetee, I am by no means an expert, and the Paramount changes through the periods I mentioned are subtle for the most part. From what I can gather the first bikes (30’s) seat stays were open at the top and then went to a ball or round end and the fork crown was pretty much flat on top. Sometime around the late 40’s the seat stays went to the flat angle. The first bike with angle cut seat stays in the chained revolution registry shows up around 1947. My 51 paramount has the angled seat stays and it also has beveled edges on the top outside area of the fork crown; again subtle stuff but it’s there. The first bikes that show up in the registry with Nervex lugs arrive around 1957 and the bikes are very similar all the way through the 70’s. So to sum it up, in my mind the bikes I chose represent a good cross section of the transitional changes to the Paramount. I’m in the process of trying to get a 73 to complete my trifecta.

If there were enough of us willing to spring ~$500 for a set, we could probably talk him into doing it.

Several years ago I met Curtis at NAHBS; he was at the Wheel Fanatyk booth with some of his hubs. I asked him about doing a run of fixed hubs using the early track bike OLD spacing (90mm front, 110mm rear), and he said it would take a run of at least ten sets to make it economically feasible.
If there were enough of us willing to spring ~$500 for a set, we could probably talk him into doing it.

Now you raise the question - I just tucked the Paramount away, way back in my dungeon. I'll take a look, by and by.

All the early high flange Paramount hubs I have seen seem to have the incorrect spelling of the Schwinn name and don't seem to be relared to just one year.

The "Schninn" stamp apparently wasn't just on Paramount hubs: Schninn hub
