Wizards! Can anyone help ID this Peugeot?

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm fairly new to bike restoration so apologise for any glaring errors. I've picked up this Peugeot which I think is comprised of all original parts (except the seat which I replaced to ride as the original was in tatters). I'd love to get a handle on what model it is. From looking at the brochures it seems to closely resemble a 1978 UO8 but with an older looking quill stem. Pictures below.

The stem is Atax?
Rear derailleur is Simplex
Shifters are Simplex
Brakes are Mafac

It has chrome on the front forks but not on the rear which seems in line with late 70s early 80s models. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks everyone

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

It appears to be a UO-8 from the late sixties thru the early to mid seventies. One giveaway would be the backs of the fork blades. If they seem to have a seam down the middle, then that would just about confirm this, except for narrowing the date range.

Thanks ever so much. Now to try and hunt down a replacement seat and matching paint for touch-ups.

Any nifty tips on how to get small patches of surface rust off the chrome on the front forks?

Try crumpled aluminum foil. Or a brass-bristle brush, which you can get in the plumbers' aisle of your hardware store. Some acid helps, such as vinegar. If you want to get crazy, you can soak it in oxalic acid. It is the most effective acid, but you have to handle it very carefully.

A hobby shop, local or online, will sell Testor's enamel paints.
Maybe $15. a set.
The white and black will match your Peugeot pretty well.
And the gold, too.
Now, where did that bottle get to?

Thanks again to you both. I'm so glad I've found this forum, you are all jolly decent. I'll pop a hi-res picture up once I've made a bit of progress.

After quick search I'm not sure Testor's have quite reached the Australian shores yet. I'll go for a hunt this weekend.

Do you think it's worth my while buying an original PX-10 racing saddle from France? By which I mean they're quite expensive and I'm not sure if this would add to the value of my bike or be any better than the Oval racing seat I popped on there at the weekend.

A Wizard A True Star

Regarding the saddle- I wouldn't, unless it's that important to you. Especially because a saddle is a really personal thing- if you like the one that's currently on there- use it until you happen to have that extra money burning a hole in your pocket, or one pops up at an extraordinarily awesome price.

Make sure everything is greased up and ride with the speed of many gazelles!

Congratulations! I hope you are super-enjoying it!

Here is a source for Testors paints, but you could search the Melbourne websites:

Amazon.com - Testors Promotional Enamel Paint Set - Hobby Modeling Paints

Again, check online locally.
My Peugeot ('72) came with a Brooks Professional saddle. Love it.
You can sometimes get a lightly used one for half price of new.

Brooks Professional: Cycling | eBay

Just buy a 25 gram tin of Brooks Proofide treatment for $10.
It'll restore the finish again and again.

The original forks on my 1985 PH-10 had seams on the back as well. Not highly visible, but there. I've noticed several other Peugeots from 80's have them as well.,,,,BD

Only the PX10 did not have seams. It's the only model of that era that had Reynolds fork blades.

Yup -- my 1980 PKN-10 Competition, the next model down from the PX-10 Super Competition, has big ugly seams down the backs of the fork blades. The workmanship leaves a bit to be desired, but it is still one of the best all-round road bikes I have ever owned.
