What can your parts bin cough up?

It's hard to enjoy real riding other than commuting at this time of year, and increasingly I've found myself digging through my parts bin and finding some cool stuff I never knew or forgot that I had. For anyone who's interested in taking part, you've got until next Sunday night to put together a parts-bin special and then post it in this thread. I'm starting with a frame that my co-workers gave me. My rules for myself are to use parts-bin parts only, including cables, tires etc. and to purchase absolutely nothing. I encourage you to do the same if possible. Let the digging begin!

I am reminded of that old redneck joke, where they mowed the front yard and found a car. I could probably build two or three bikes just off the porch overflow.....

Tripped over a nicer Simplex RD last week, put it on the market, and its off to CA in the AM. I need to do that another 50 times or so.

Porches count too! When I say "part-bin" I'm including my basement.

I was just looking through my storage closet looking for a missing stem. (Didn't find it)
If I find a frame set, I have a 105 group and tubular wheel set for it. Just need cranks and tires.

I found a Race Face seat post I had forgotten about and put it on my Rocky Mountain.

A vintage hairball?

I have a junkbox of stray framepump and cable clips from a PX-10 to a set of turkey levers off a Moto Super Mirage. Oh, and reflectors from every bike I've owned. Sakae/SR chainrings, and who knows what else. Been a while since digging down to the bottom.

I'm putting together a Girvin Offroad Climber hybrid bike for the Velo Cheapo challenge

My parts bin coughed up the candidate bike itself, plus some new grips, pedals, a chain, a seat, and some NOS Shimano Exage cantilever brakes.

I did buy some new tires, tubes, cables, and housing. The stuff on hand either wouldn't fit or was too short.

oddjob2 01-11-15 09:02 PM

I have a Smorgasbord.

noglider 01-11-15 09:19 PM

I have tons of stuff, none of it I need. I keep having to buy more.

jiangshi 01-11-15 09:21 PM

I can build two Campy 10s bikes up, and one Campy vintage bike up. No desire to do either.

I can do the same, but I've really got Campy/Shimano/SRAM wheelsets coming out of my ears.

I'm not quite sure how it got this crazy, but there's some fixin to do when I get around to it.

Somewhere, somehow, there's a match for this stuff. :)

I'm fairly certain it's not here though.

I have about everything you need to build a decent early '90's mountain bike- except the frame. I'll soon be adding a Shimano Tourney triple crankset. I expect much more will be added as time passes- like in a couple of weeks when I get that XL Cannondale R800 frameset he wants out of his garage.

More tomorrow. And thanks

I, on the other hand, have three bikes. The CX and MTB share a seatpost/saddle, and the road and the CX share a wheelset! It's a bit nuts. Oh and I only have two sets of pedals. Talk about downsizing! (Hope it will change soon)

Rats. I just finished building a bike with most of my parts bin. I did find a Shimano 600 headset in the drawer. I honestly have no idea where it came from.

lasauge 01-11-15 11:05 PM

Perfect timing for this thread, by some coincidence I've already been working on a parts bin build that's very nearly ready to show off... here's a preview, stem goes with the frame.

I was just in the garage today looking at all my bits and pieces sorta scattered all over the place. I'm a front wheel and a chain or two short of 4complete bikes, none of which will fit me :bang:

That's alright, it can qualify if you haven showed it off yet. In any case for those of you who want to take the challenge, there it is. What kind of bike can you put together with parts on hand? It doesn't hVe to be a bike that does everything, it can serve one bizarre purpose if you like - like a bike that you'll take fishing, or a bike to catch penguins on.

I could easily burp out a slightly modernized version of my Fuji Team. Stopping might be a problem as I lack a decent set of brakes that aren't already spoken for.

Lack of funds lately. It's been taunting me.

Was at a swap this weekend and bought a Phil BB just because........ turns out to be a match for a Raleigh Sprite 27 I've had hanging around forever.

Henry III 01-12-15 12:33 AM

I just have one of the larger drawers in my tool chest which is still a smaller chest. I don't like keeping a boat load of stuff and normally sell off most things I'm not using if all my projects are finished. Most of the random things I have are more of old crusty non desirable mid level Campag stuff. Random single hubs, non complete headsets shifters just because I like old Campag friction shifters for some unknown reason.

Not to mention my shed is only 8x10x6 with six bikes, park repair stand, frame jig, torch setup, tool chest and 2x8 work bench. So it's a tight fit to say the least.

OldsCOOL 01-12-15 05:01 AM

Makes me wanna hack up a Huffy.

Can't wait to see this one!

I found a pack of 1.5's I took from my son's truck when he was 17.
