That figure eight idea is a good one in general. I'll bear it in mind. It could be tricky.

This sounds fun- although I also am questioning my ability to do 122 miles..

You don't have to do the whole 122. Just ride the first 61 then turn around and ride back to the start.

I am rational, it will be too early in the season for me to be doing 100 miles, let alone 122 in April.

David325 01-17-15 06:09 PM

Thanks Jim.

@mountaindave, I so want to do this without dropping the $$$$! Do you know if they are riding on a packed trail (I'm thinking a groomed snow mobile trail) under the soft top?

Last year there was a 6 mile descent on what was nearly a sheet of ice. This year it was fluffy snow. It is a south-facing forest service road that varies depending on snowmobile use and weather. The rest are rural gravel roads and also vary. This is the second year and the number more than doubled. The local LBS rents bikes (gotta get your name in early). If it hadn't been for my girl's hockey team traveling, I would have been there. Fun times!

OK count me in ( @photogravity ) but give me an out! Brought the Cycleops in the house yesterday. Now have to put a bike on it!

Since rhm started this thread, I have managed to get in some "rides" on the computrainer. The weather has been too cold for me to want to get on a bicycle right now and I've been busy running back and forth between Williamsport and Brunswick, so the computrainer will have to suffice. My hope is that by keeping up some sort of training regimen in the cold weather, a ride this early in the season won't result in too much pain for me. I've done at least two or three centuries in the past, so doing a 200k is definitely within reach.

Your spot in the van is reserved. :thumb:

SJX426 01-20-15 11:57 AM

@photogravity I am pleased you were able to do that! I just couldn't find the time this weekend, but am determined to get into shape by 4/12! Thanks for the spot! It is motivation!

Yesterday was fine for riding, as is today. I took out the foreign exchange student that we have staying with us yesterday, both on 50+ year old bikes, we did 25 miles.

Actually, you're right. Even over where I am, yesterday was pretty nice and today is pretty mild. The problem is that by the time I get finished work, it'll be getting dark, so it will be too cool for me to get on the bicycle and enjoy the ride. I'm very glad to hear you're getting out for some rides of late.

jimmuller 01-20-15 01:25 PM

Yeah, no, so like, you know, I, um, rode my bike to work this morning, and I intend to ride it back home this evening. First bike commute since mid-December.

rhm 01-20-15 02:23 PM

I feel like such a slacker. My wife gave me a ride to the station this morning.

SJX426 01-20-15 03:02 PM

I haven't been on a bike yet this year! Pushed them around in the garage though!

Hey. I see what you did there. :)

Is it that obvious? :)

photogravity 01-21-15 01:48 PM

It's snowing today, so I will forgo a ride outside and get onto the computrainer again. I'm going to be as ready for this ride as I possibly can. :) I can hardly wait.

photogravity 01-26-15 05:46 AM

The planned 122 mile course looks like it will be a great early-in-the-year ride. :) I can hardly wait! @jimmuller you really need to come down for this. For those closer to my digs, places in my Sprinter are reserved for @SJX426 and @rccardr right now. If there are more folks coming from the DC Metro area, there's still room for a couple more people.

jimmuller 01-26-15 05:56 AM

PG (et al.), I'm really wishing I could get down for it, but we are playing a church service on Sunday morning. I have to be awake and in good shape fairly early after driving home on Saturday night. It ain't gonna' work. Bummer.

My weekly dilemma :innocent: shared with a few others each week. Welcome to the club! :p

Bummer, indeed. :( We'll hopefully have an opportunity to do a ride with you and your sweetie this year depending on how much of a drain on resources the new house proves to be.

But with an impending retirement (I think I read somewhere you're thinking of retiring soon), I would expect that will change a little bit, right?

If I could convince Mrs. PB, it would be in the next three years. If she continues to hold sway, it will need to wait another eight. There is this one challenge, however, and it's called health insurance. :p Despite the term assigned by POTUS, there is nothing affordable :twitchy: about buying your own when you reach your late 50s and early 60s. So for now, it is a major motivator to keep serving the church.

P.S. I do serve a fantastic one! :D

PM sento to @photogravity. I'm thinking that this is for me, too. Would a '77 Fuji S-10S be an old enough bike? It's my earliest one...

I think your Fuji would be perfectly acceptable, but @rhm is the decider. :D I responded to your PM and have a seat reserved for you in the BRB (big red bus).
