I am putting my bike back together after getting it back from powder coating. Headset binds slightly at about 9 or 10 o'clock, if straight ahead is noon.. The hell of it is that I don't know if it's a new problem or if it existed before I disassembled it. I had a local shop install the fixed cups and crown race, and I trusted them a bit too much, I think. I know the crown race was not flat. I'll have to ride it to find out if it handles worse than I remember.
The adjustable cup of the bottom bracket wouldn't screw in, but Larry at Green Bay Cycles in Winnetka (IL) solved that - I was afraid I had cross-threaded it, but it turned out to be some sort of burr or other small obstruction. He used another B/B to chase the threads.
The rest of the assembly should go smoothly, although I have a lot of cleaning of parts to do. The target is Monday - sunny, mid-high 40s, light wind are forecast for late afternoon. I can recommend Larry at Green Bay Cycles, though, and I expect the other mechanics are reliable, too.
The powder looks good to my eyes overall, but I can also see imperfections if I look closely. The lugs and serial number still stand out, though it's clearly powder and not paint, and I haven't noticed any voids, if that's the proper word. I'm not sure what the color is called anymore, but I think most C & V folks would call it 'celeste.'

Mini-vee salvaged from old Gary Fisher, installed on my Colin Laing tandem. This bike wants for stopping power, so I'm here to give it some! Feels a bit smushy on account of using a road lever, but it will throw the stoker into my back if applied without warning.
Also converted this tandem to front-drive. The derailleur never quite worked right on that curved seat tube, in spite of various bodges I machined to try and make things better. The cranks are shorter and the rings are Biopace, for my knees' sake.

Yesterday's tooling around - I swapped out the wheelset on my Moto GS. This Ambrosio/Ofmega set from the Puch offers a great ride with smooth-rolling hubs. Wire bead Paselas actually weren't that bad getting on. I think they look great on this bike.

It's being pulled by a dual cable lever on this bike, which also applies the front cantilever. I modified the old Tektro aero road lever to take two cables.
Incidentally, brake judder is less after machining the drum, so maybe with some time and use it will even out completely.
That brake was providing the majority of the stopping power for the bike, before I added the mini-vee.

I futzed around with the boat anchor seat, post, clamp setup on the Strawberry.
Had it off to weigh it, 2.4 lb.
and saw a view that explains why it was used even if you can't really see it like this on the bike.
While it was off, I lubed the nuts and threads of the clamp with anti-seize, they cinch down much more now without dragging or feeling like they are galling or seizing so I think it will hold like it should, we'll see.

Put a chain on the Prologue after switching out the seat post, stem, bars, and wheels. Decided I really liked the silver 7800 against the semi-tech-y black wheels and tan wall tires (well, I knew I liked the wheels already as I'd had them on the bike before). Took it out for two rides tonight, knee quibbling be darned! She's a stunner, and a great climber.

Last weekend I left the Medici here at my shop because it was drizzling and my wife was here so I rode home with her. I am going to ride it home. Leaving in about 10 minutes after I lock up! It is about 15 miles so nice afternoon ride. Joe

Hmmmm...
I was swapping parts from one beat up Univega Gran Rally to another and as I was putting my no shiny HCW-5 away on top of my shiny HCW-5 wrench I noticed a difference that I thought was just a change in where the hanger hole was situated...nope...substantial change in length...seems to be the only tools that have changed lenghtwise...gotta be a reason...

I spent the day refurbishing two rear hubs. The process is sometimes a bit difficult but produces great results. Pull completely apart and clean all surfaces. Then polish the cones and races to a mirror finish, then re-assemble. Taking everything down to square one and then making sure it is like factory fresh is a bit of time consuming, but the end result is a hub that will ride for a few thousand more miles. And it makes the Quarantine a little easier to tolerate. Smiles, MH

I took my wife's Miami Vice down off the hooks. She hasn't ridden it since I crashed her out some time ago. She's a runner and the crash set her back a bit. Any way, all of the components are now in a box and next will be the touch up. I may put the Wolber rims on some 6700 hubs, and make it a 9 speed. The drive train and brakes will be 7700 STI except for the crank arms. They would be the 1050 because 170mm. It's small for me but if she won't ride it ...

I'm taking the '88 Centurion Ironman Expert out for a ride. I've decided to reduce the fleet by half(8-4), and this one is on the fence. It's up against an '80 Trek 414, with immaculate paint. The Ironman paint is so so. Is that a good enough reason?
