Fender Suggestions for Miyata 610
What fenders to run on my '83 Miyata 610?
So, at some point I really have to slap on a pair of fenders,...but the little bit of research I've done has revealed three things...
1) You might be one of the unlucky fellows who's tire/rim eats a fender if God-forbid something gets caught up in it!
2) Metal fenders look great,..hold up great,...(unless #1 happens!)
3) There's always those Zefal break away fenders....? (having not seen them in person they appear a bit cheap looking?)
So,.. figured I'd see whats what.
Take it away guys!

SKS also has the breakaway feature for the front fender. I have them on a couple of bikes but haven't tested that feature. (In fact, it has not happened to me in around 150,000 miles of fendered riding. Yes, I have stopped and pulled a lot of stuff out over the years, but haven't had a wheel stopped yet. The SKS fenders are good. Stiff, good hardware, vibration free even after putting on a large front flap.
Planet Bike fenders come in bright colors that motorists actually see and the plastic cuts beautifully to mount on tight bikes (not an issue for your 610 at all), but the hardware and design decisions are suspect. I find myself beefing up the attachments at the brakes and dreaming of adding a second pair of front stays.
I have tried any other fenders in recent years.
Ben

I have a couple sets of SKS Longboard fenders and they're great. I have cream ones on my robin's egg blue Surly, Smoke black ones on my black mixte and a pair of silver ones waiting to go on to my Miyata Mixte. I think they look nicer than the Planet Bike fenders - more 'polished'.

I just recently installed a Velo Orange set. They look beautiful, and compliment pre-80s bikes very well. but the pricing and the installation process is a drawback.
I also have a pair of black Planet bike full fenders. installation was easier in comparison, and was significantly cheaper. honestly, i see no reason not to go this route unless you like the chrome look

I put a set of SKS ChromoPlastics on my 1985 Trek 720. There's not a lot of room for fenders on that bike- but I'm able to do it and IMO, it looks nice and it's functional.

SKS Longboards are the clear winner, IMHO. I have used (Metal) VO, Honjo, Berthoud, (Plastic),Planet Bike, SKS. Zefal and the easiest to install and best working are the Longboards. They have the breakaway front and are easily modified with a heat *** or Exacto knfe if need be. The 45mm size also lets you run up to a 38mm tire as the 45mm measuremen, is actuallt 45mm. Most metal fenders are 5mm-7mm narrower on the the underside due to the rolled edges. They are also quieter if you find yourself off road.

another shout out for SKS Longboards
My only experience is with SKS Longboards and as a rookie fender amender I highly recommend them.
They are on my Schwinn Criss Cross hybrid winter beater and they do the job, were easy to install and look good.

Your #2 is only partly correct. Lightweight Alum. could get jammed up if something gets caught in the wheel but a Stainless Steel fender won't, There are several MFG. of nice Ss. fenders such as Tanaka who makes a lovely, albeit expensive brass fender.
grabbed from the google
But don't overthink it, buy a pair, install and ride.

fender1 mentioned a 45mm fender. Is this the widest fender that will fit on a 610?

The better SKS and Planet Bike fenders all have quick release features on their stays that break free if something gets caught in the fender. I've got SKS Longboards and PB Cascadias on my bikes. They are comparable in quality, but the Cascadias were much easier to install.
