Pronunciation

Is Cinelli pronounced 'sin-eli' or is it 'chin-eli? Or is either/neither correct?

JJScaliger 01-27-15 06:35 PM

chin

cale 01-27-15 06:39 PM

The syllable "ci" is hard as in ciao.

Edited to add: Cinelli is pronounced Chi Nelly not chin eli.

bici_mania 01-27-15 06:49 PM

Well I learned something new today. Thanks.

I pronounce it "TONG-ee" bit with the "o" sounding like the way you say tonga sort of a shortened "o" sound I guess.

When I saw famous Japanese Architect, the Jeopardy in me wanted to say, "who is Minoru Yamasaki?"

That's close to how I say it, but I talk slower. :)

Bonus Round: A famous french derailleur maker, with an "H".

Bikes and Jeeps 01-27-15 08:26 PM

How do you say Exage

I say X age but I'm sure that must be wrong.

Works for me. French would say X ahge (ahge rhymes with garage). Most of these "age" words are derived from French though Exage is undoubtedly made up.

What is Huret, pronounced U-ray.

John E 01-27-15 09:15 PM

I'll bet most Americans pronounce Simplex and mixte incorrectly.

When I worked at Bikecology we got a free radio ad every time Wolfman Jack screwed up the pronunciation of Nishiki beyond the usual incorrect Americanization, Nee SHEE key.

I've always pronounced it "tawn-gay" and nobody has seemed offended.

Are you trying to correct the guy who said it right?

Well the French would pronounce the "h". Just saying...

You must not speak French.

rhm 01-27-15 10:00 PM

If you insert the word "Huret" (as a French person would say it while speaking French) into an English sentence, no one would understand you. The H didn't sound like our H, the U is a vowel we don't have, and the R sounds like someone clearing his throat. In situations like this, good communication takes precedence over good pronunciation. Try "Hugh Ray" or something and just don't let a French poison hear you.

because you are correct.

and back to post #1 it's an Italian vowel "i" and "e" so more like "chee-Naylee" if you really want to put a fine point on it.
But we are allowed some yankee slop in our pronunciation...

cale 01-27-15 10:01 PM

Okay, Monsieur Hugo (Yugo).

The "h" is so soft as to be almost unheard but it's there, smarty pants.

"Oo-ray" is how I'd render it, agreeing with Rudi that the "r" sound is more guttural than in English.

If we're going to have a "pronunciation" thread, we might as well try to get close to what's correct. Just sayin'. ;)
