Speedster...First Bike

OK everybody probably gets sick of hearing this but........I just bought my first vintage bike and I know NOTHING about it! All I know is that it is a Schwinn "Speedster". Any info would help. What were the speedsters and how did they differ from say a typhoon?

Hi, cool beach cruiser! Take a look here:

https://www.oldroads.com/

I think there's lots of baloon tire bike stuff there.

There are some Schwinnies here, but I'm not one of them... however, here is a page orgainizing a whole bunch of Schwinn related links that may help:
https://sheldonbrown.com/chicago-schwinns.html

And don't worry, even those of us who have learned something about older bikes are stumped from time to time. Have fun!

Cool ride...did you buy both?

I have a Schwinn Speedster kids model which I plan to restore for my son (now 8-months-old) in a nice red color. Only flaw besides dirt is a small dent in the rear fender.

Other than that I don't know crap about them.

Didn't the Speedster have a 2-speed kickback hub?

Hi,
I have most of a 1963 Speedster, and part of a 70s one.
The thing is, I think the name was used through the years for different types of bikes. For example, the 63 was intended for "Shorter boys" according to the 63 catalog, and the 70s one I have has a frame sized for a pretty tall person.
The real news is that there is a cool site that has a bunch of Schwinn catalogs scanned in and ready for browsing:https://www.geocities.com/sldatabook/contents.html
Hope this helps.

I also know nothing about your bike.. but it looks a smidge like my first Schwinn... which was named... hmmm... Thunderbird? Maybe Spitfire... early-mid 60's, 24" frame, blue with white details... awesome fast cruiser

Yes, it has a 2 speed hub. Quite interesting. They were really ahead of their time. My bike was made in 1953.

I find the speedster first listed in 1959 on my price lists sheets. If a kick back hub 59 would be closer as schwinn used the manuel 2-speed in 55&56.the green bike in the photo has the 65 mag sprocket I beleave. The black bike looks to have the manuel 2-speed,and earlier 50s style of paint on the fenders--I think by 58 or 59 the painted fenders lost the white tips---sam
