I removed the 105 STI group that came on my Torelli and went 7700 indexed downtube group. All of my bikes are either friction or indexed downtube shifted except for a thumb indexed shifted Trek 850 MTB. Am I in?

I, Tihabanero, do hereby petition the ABC Board of Admissions for entry into the ABC club.

Working weekends at a bike shop requires me to sell bikes with brifters and actually test ride them on occasion (I hate the experience, but it is a mandated part of the job). Hopefully my record of being in the bike biz since 1984 and having never given in to marketing pressure to own a bike with brifters or an indexed shift road bike affords me a grant of clemency by the ABC Court of Appeals for having to ride bikes occasionally, as required by my employer, as to afford me membership to the club.

Count me among the supporters. I have never owned a brifter or any sort, not even in a parts bin. Although I haven't owned a bike that isn't fixed-gear since my sweet Basso got murderated in a nasty head-on collision. But you can count on me to return to downtube shifters and freewheel cogsets when I feel the need to have multiple gears.

I agree that gripshift should be forbidden. Since there are so many different shifting mechanisms out there, if you include all the stuff that predates downtube shifters, I propose the following weed-out criterion: If you can shift gears without removing a hand completely from the handlebars to do so, then you cannot join.

Post back when you get the leg strength to brake a fixed-gear. Single-speeds are the training wheels of one-cog bicycles.

I barely know what a brifter is. Never held or tried one, and don't own any.
Just making my small comment on "clubs".

Brifters only work for me on my CX bike. I don't want to take a hand off the bars while bouncing down a trail in the trees. I've got Ultegra on my Kona JTS and they're fantastic. Do people actually put them on C&V bikes? Odd thread for this forum. Who hates carbon?

It sounds like there are a lot of brifter sets sitting in parts bins. Just send them to me! I am converting all of my C&V bikes to STI. And no, I do not want to join your cute little club.

I proudly own many bikes with "brifters" and will sit over here in the corner by myself. I will say, however, that I was recently riding one of these bikes after a couple of rides on my older bike and I "air shifted" by reaching for the down tube. Are you happy now?

- yep I've got Shimano Ultegra 8-spd STI on a Schwinn Paramount that was sold with 7-spd DT.

No carbon though - carbon is the devil. Brifters only rank as minor satanic minions compared to carbon.

Post back when you're 57, have had 3 scopes and require knee replacement. Lots of leg strength left, just an absence of cartilage. I used to believe that fixed was good for the knees but now I'm not that sure.

They might not have any problems but I bet you couldn't keep up, esp with that front shifter....

^Hah, you're absolutely correct. Not a chance for me hanging with them or team CF! Anyhow, the above depiction show rod lever shifters, friction but work well. Even more simple and with rapid shift is an index version. This set-up and adjustment is a bit crude and temperamental but once dialed is excellent.

Oh the shame! Life is hell. The evil one made me do it. I sold my soul to Satan. My tears don't lie. I took the DT shifters off a classic Trek 520 touring bike & installed the eeeeeeevil brifters! Sorry I can't join you comrades. Brave on without me. Carry the battle on to the end.

you would still need surgery if you had gears, because you would have been mashing large gears like eveyone else.
