It was laying in the street. Nice wheel building tool.

Yesterday: A tailgate from a pickup truck in the grass between US36 and the bike path.
No, I did not bring it home.

Back in 2017, when a friend and I rode the ACA Southern Tier route, I found a little Gerber folding knife in the road just outside Brawley, California. That was on February 23rd. It was a fairly useless little thing, only about 2 inches long, but nicely made, so I stuck it in my pocket.

On April 2, between Bogalusa, Louisiana and Poplarville, Mississippi, we ran into a young (compared to us) guy named Jay, who was walking from Panama City, Florida, to Albuquerque NM. (I had forgotten his name, but just checked my journal--that also accounts for the exact dates). We talked for maybe five minutes, and got onto the subject of interesting stuff we had found or seen in the road. He said "I found this knife a while back," and pulled out a little Gerber identical to mine. We compared the serial numbers, which only differed by a couple of hundred. That was cool.

I think the knife is still around here somewhere, but I can't find it to include a photo. Sorry.

I've often wondered if Jay made it all the way to New Mexico. He had a pretty bad sunburn when we saw him.

I picked him up from work one day and started to give him a hard time about the uniform and his life choices. As we hit the highway, he said to me, you're right, and started throwing his uniform out the window, while screamin "f-you - I quit forever!!!"

30 years on, he's now a VP at a major company </end of story>

Looks more like a '70s Taco Bell uniform...

As an aside, my kid sister worked at TB starting at age 16. 40 years later, she was leaving her job as a Finance guru at Taco Bell corporate headquarters. She wore her '70s TB uniform on her last day... Great for laughs!

Not much because many of my rides are on back country dirt roads with little traffic. Did find on pavement rides a screwdriver and a US Army marked zippo lighter.

Passed this poor abandoned soul on my commute home and suffered walking a bit to bring it to my garage:

The bottle cage actually seems to be a decent Trek one I could use. The swept back handlebars are comfy, but way narrower than my shoulders. Guess I'll upgrade my daughter's bike to it as she grows. I can also take the rod portion of the kick stand to lengthen an adjustable kickstand I've been trying to put on my road bike that's too short.

Will probably have to angle grind the rest to pieces and toss in the trash piece by piece over the weeks.

I did come upon a box that had some soggy clothes in it. I usually don’t stop for such things, but I did see what thought was a Sub-Pop shirt or BLM. I was wrong it was way more controversial, and serious.

I have found some nice and interesting items but aside from material goods, I will repeat one of the first and IMO best posts from Ed. Peace and tranquility.

The same buddy from the reflector post I made earlier was on a ride with me and we spotted something in the roadside weeds while on a climb. Turned out to be someone's journal for that year, spiral-bound with a floral cover and soaked from overnight rain. Took it back to his place and I borrowed some wax paper so I could interleave pieces between the pages to keep things from sticking together as it dried. Got back home and let it dry out, then read it for clues to see if I could find the owner. Found a full name and a geographical reference so looked up the phone number and called the recent visitee. Guy answered and said, "What are you selling?" I explained the situation and gave him my contact info to pass along to the book's owner. Got a call a few minutes later from the woman who'd left her journal on the roof of their Porsche Targa before driving off. I offered to mail it back to her and before doing so wrote down a summary of my year for her to read to make up for my having had to read her journal to find out what I needed to in order to return it.
