i am buying a De Rosa bike. I would like to know the model. frame is nice and all equipment is campagnolo. rins campagnolo mexico 68. any idea????

I believe the frame is the "other" de rosa (if it is one), not the de rosa you're probably thinking of.

what do you mean? it is not original???

It's unlike any De Rosa I've ever seen. The seat cluster is wrong, the fork crown is wrong, the bottom bracket is wrong.

The de rosa most people think of, and the one you mean, is Ugo de rosa (and family) of Milan. There was also a builder named de rosa from Naples, and this is that de rosa. It is likely a de rosa, but not the de rosa you were thinking of.

I've come across them before - they seemed ok. Never ridden one. They're a little crude compared to Ugo de rosa.

For what it's worth, I would consider it some what deceptive to sell this as a de rosa without the explanation/disclaimer. It is, technically, a de rosa...but if I were selling one, I'd have called it a Naples de rosa to avoid confusion.

I would agree with KonAaron Snake. It's not a Ugo De Rosa and whomever you bought it from should probably have explained that to you.

Agreed.

@op If the bike you are buying is inexpensive enough it may still be a fun rider for you.

Something to think about.

It should be VERY inexpensive given the poor presentation.

It might be fun as a discussion piece. You could ride it to your local bike-nerd hang out, wait for everyone to tell you it's a fake and then drop some knowledge. The Naples de rosa actually pre-dates Ugo De Rosa as I recall, so you can be haughty and say you have the ORIGINAL De Rosa.

I've always wondered how the intellectual property issue was worked out on this.

I can get it very cheap, usd150 or less. but i do not have a lot of space...the story sounds interesting to me.

Yes, good points.

Buying a vintage bike can be tricky business if the knowledge base isn't up to the challenge...

So hard to get $$$ out if an owner decides to resell.

Than onward soldier. At 150 you have an interesting bike...and it's certainly able to sell for more than that with some cleaning and decent marketing. I'm sure there are some photos somewhere of the other de rosa - the logo was a wheel in the "o" as I recall. I'd probably try and have some decals made up.

Interesting thread...I always like when we get into the history of things...I never knew there was "another" De Rosa...and you guys have taught me a lot. Wonder if the seller in this thread even knew that there were two? It seems that it takes a quite well educated group of "bike nerds" to even know this!

this is the right place!

I never knew there was another deRosa either. But for $150, what the hell;it seems nice enough.

I also don't recognize the Campy derailleurs with the raised lettering in the casting. Which group is that? Where does it sit in the Campy hierarchy?

KonAaron Snake 02-15-15 12:39 PM

Avanti. The bottom.
