Recommend a frame pump
It took me about a year to realize the little metal spike on my Ironman frame is there to secure a frame pump. I have been swapping my flat kit with co2 around between my two bikes but I've decided it's time to get a dedicated flat kit on the Ironman and I was figuring I may as well look into a frame pump.
So, is there a particular type or model that is made to work with that spike on the frame or will any frame pump do? |
I have used Zefal HPX for years. It is a metal pump. Measure your top tube to figure out the proper length of the pump.

Second the HPX. Very good pump. You can easily get higher pressures than you want to ride. A smart move is to use one of those velcro straps for pumps around the top tube. Knocking the pump off and running over it tends to be detrimental to its function. Having the car behind you run it over is usually fatal. (I really like the '80s top of top tube brake full brake cable housing. I run the velcro under it so when I take the pump off, the velcro stays in place.)
Edit: on some pegs the pump will rattle on rough roads. An easy way to silence it is to cut a strip of 3/4" wide innertube say a foot long. Now cut a 3/4" piece of innertube for 23c tires, ie a piece you can just barely stretch over the pump handle. Now place the middle of the strip over the pump peg hole on the pump grip. Pull the ends of the strip toward the shaft of the pump. Work the innertube ring over the pump handle and innertube strip. Trim the strip ends to just flush with the ring. With black on clack, no one will ever notice and you won't have to hear it. (And it is a little more secure; nice when you hit those rough roads.) Ben |
To stay vintage go with a Zefal HP. To be sensibly modern, go with the Park Tool frame pump.

Zefal HP-X size 3 pumps fit my 55cm frames along the seat tube.
Since the 1960 Capo has a Rathausmann copper badge on the seat tube and downtube pump pegs, I found a blatantly period-incorrect Mt. Zefal 16-incher which serves well. For the UO-8 I found a slightly longer Blackburn pump with fits the downtube pegs, and which works far better than those great-looking, poorly-performing Zefal cigar tubes with the detachable screw-on hoses. |
My Zefal hp runs the top tube and is wrapped with a Banda toe clip strap. Staying vintage right down to the pump strap.

I like the topeak Morph...it's reasonably priced and works VERY well. Down side...it won't work with the peg, it uses a bracket.

The Zefal HPF #4 fits well on my 56" RB1. Be sure to measure your top tube!
