Not sure whether to be honored or offended.:) All I know is that the wife knows what's up when I go through the basement first when I get home in the evening. Usually bringing in something new or old. I think she's finished fighting that fight. Still trying to figure out my holy grail, but the Black Lightning was one of them.

Not really, They stopped competing against Shimano with a full line of components in the early 1990s and by the mid 1990s, the company was sold. Sadly, the original Suntour tooling was scrapped....

To the OP, no need to stop at "one" garage full. N + 1 is the proper number of GARAGES.

Suntour is gone.

There is a company that bought the Suntour name and is cranking out cheap, bottom end parts. But it's not really Suntour.

Currently I think my America is pretty damned close, but I'm also totally enamored with it.

These old bicycles remind me of my dating years. I find the "one [bike] of my dreams" and come to believe I can't be happy without her. Then after I spend a few hours cleaning, polishing, repairing, Then finally riding a few times..... I am back to Craigslist and yard sales looking for something new.

Fortunately collecting a preserving a few old classic-vintage bicycles is perfectly legal (or can be). I enjoy the wrenching, I like learning about the many old brands, and components, and I love the cycling. It's all win-win.

Dating is illegal? ^^

I believe if you're above a certain age, depending your state.

I meant within the legal construct of my marriage..... the bicycles are OK. Dating (other than the wife) however.... would be wrong.

Perfectly acceptable... would have been grammatically more accurate.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I still haven't landed my "Moby Dick" of a grail bike.......
And till I do so, my N+last grail bike radar will remain "on"......

rjhammett 03-02-15 09:49 PM

I am not convinced that once you find your 'holy grail' that you are suddenly cured of that deadly n+1 disease. Maybe you are cured for a couple weeks but it will come back. No immunity for n+1.

PeregrineA1 03-02-15 10:12 PM

I got my grail (or one of them) right at the new year. I still check CL every day.

One never knows.......

sofaman 03-02-15 10:13 PM

Last year, I found my one desire, a classic Gazelle Champion Mondial. Set of clinchers, set of tubulars -- check.

I should be all set, right? But then, man that Alan aluminum frame is something I've always wanted to try, and wow, that Concorde is a steal! and I'm really intrigued by that new LeMond Washoe. And that's not even counting the eventual Derosa or Pinarello. Is counseling available?

What's with the pipe insulation on the top tubes/ all over the bikes? I imagine protection...from sitting in the garage?

marius.suiram 03-03-15 04:19 AM

In the biginning, I did the same. I was hiding them in the garage.
But now when I make some good extra money selling bikes, she doesn't care anymore.

rootboy 03-03-15 05:36 AM

I've found it helps to have other interests. And to be more selective.
Only buy the good stuff. You'll end up with many fewer bikes.

Agreed.

No shortage of hobbies/pursuits around here.

Kayaks/sailboats/flyfishing/travel/books and on and on and..........:)

It's often surprising there is any money left in the accounts.

Bikedued 03-03-15 06:33 AM

In 2012 an announcement was made that Suntour would live on in SunXCD. Then the components came out, and I haven't heard much about it since. The prices where you can find them are expensive, which might explain why it didn't get more widespread. The former president of Suntour passed away in 2014, and he was apparently the inspiration behind it all.,,,,BD

The pipe insulation keeps them warm at night.....

Kidding aside, it protects the top tubes from getting dented if the bars should swing around fast during hanging them up or taking them down off the hooks, etc.

Not all top tube dents come from heroic things like crashes in the peloton!

My unknowns are in the storage unit where she rarely goes and then they are in boxes. Currently there are enough in the garage that hanging one more in the group is not noticeable. Then there are bare frames (no paint), you can have as many as you like. Swap them out and she doesn't know one from the other.

Just don't put pictures on your screen saver of the ones she hasn't seen! Don't ask me how I know.

Oh and BTW, it is not about NEED as in "why do you NEED so many?" That opens a whole new opportunity of discussion about how many shoes do you need etc.

gioscinelli 03-03-15 05:34 PM

Hey @retyred I see a Peugeot PX 10 with Nervex Professional lugs in your humungous collection (symptoms of addiction, time for AAA), and wonder what year it is? Wow, what a stable full of gorgeous mix of Euro stallions!

RobbieTunes 03-03-15 06:30 PM

It can continue unabated, unabashed.
No mere sideline, but full fascination, a flimsy fetish.

The ebb and flow of makes and models, a favorite here, disposing there.
One considered a time without, neither comprehensible nor desired.

But stopped in my tracks, a particular type of frame, a keeper of the flame
did alter perceptions, reactions, foreseeable anticipation based on fact and reputation.

The waves of activity became less frequent, less severe, dependent on weather
and whether there was time to indulge in the advances of the era.

Ancient steel from new fires, angles formed from an unbridled mind.
Approached from the past, coincidental to the future, available in the now.

The dozens down to a parcel, the packet down to few,
Particulars now the focus of my life riding anew.

In other words, a bunch of bikes, then one that changed things, and now a lot less.
For everyone, it's different. Either the hobby continues, or something changes it.
