Here is the enigma of my collection. It lacks a serial number. There were no decals when I bought it. It is fillet brazed with a heart on the fork crown. No it is not the heart of a De Rosa. Shimano dropouts. I have not had any luck figuring out who built it.

I have a Free Spirit, with double butted Reynolds 531 frame and fork. Not much other than the frame and fork is original. Seeing a 531 frame that has such a relaxed geometry is odd enough, but then knowing that it was sold by Sears adds to the oddness factor.

Plus it has always struck me as strange to have the name Ted Williams associated with cycling. Does anyone know if he ever even rode a bike? I just did a Google image search for Ted Williams Bicycle, I see pictures of bicycles, and pictures of Ted Williams, but none of Ted Williams on (or with) a bicycle. However, it is kind of neat that the first person pictured on the search page (I haven't looked to figure out why) is Sheldon Brown.
My dad had one purchased new, to replace a Belgium made Montgomery Wards brand bike that was stolen out of our garage. The Wards bike was lugged steel, 24" frame, gold-bronze color, Simplex derailleurs, with cottered cranks, and rode very nicely. My dad had a thing for Sears though.... The Free Spirit Ted Williams with double butted 531 was made Austria and was a really crappy bike to ride. It was a light bike, but very tiring to get anywhere on it. The same vintage Schwinn Continental was nicer to ride, at least on the level and downhill. The geometry was just off, the BB was too low (27 x 1¼ tires), pedals would hit way too easily. I don't know what happened to it.

I've recently sold or donated most of my bike parts but I've held onto these.

Tag Heuer Chronoprinter 505. Kinda useless without the transmitter but I like it. Has some provenance.

Western Auto Bicycle Tire Tool. Handy little bugger

Phillips Kids Bike. Has already survived one grand kid.

A real old-school church key. No plastic handles or refrigerator magnets. Collinsware, Chicago. It lives in my toolbox and is often applied to IPA bottles.

You can't quite read the "Chicago" on the back side.

I still have this barely used (if at all) 80's brain bucket a friend found in a storage unit buy. I may even wear it and embarass myself.

Do you have a close-up of the heart (or is all of this somewhere on another thread?)

I'm curious. I know Lovell, a short-time Canadian builder, used a heart in his graphics (including on fork crowns).

He was a fantastic racer, and supposedly made only a couple of hundred bikes before being paralyzed in a bike accident in 1982 or 1983.

I don't know if he ever build a fillet brazed frame, but it's possible - and worth comparing the crown on your bike to his work.

I had posted pictures a couple years ago but it has rolled off. Here are some pictures before the repaint and rebuild.

I think it's built for radball or cycleball or whatever they call it.

One oddball is a vintage pair of 32/40 EA3 alloy rims branded Sulloy. Found on a 50's drop bar Raleigh Sports. They are quite similar to the Raleigh "Westrick" rim profile

My 3Rensho funny bike in general

Nothing truly odd-ball about it though except for the cranks --- Sugino 75 aero profile with a carbon chainwheel

As I don't see a whole lot of them, I suppose the most oddball parts I have are the Command Shifters. I have a couple of sets of 6 speed Suntour Command Shifters, they mount inboard of the brake levers, and put your shifting in the perfect place for riding on the ramps and hoods. Suntour's Accushift and Shimano's SIS indexing systems both used the same cog distance- so a 6 speed freewheel is interchangeable with either a Suntour or SIS system.

Because Accushift wasn't particularly successful, Shimano's "brifter" design won out- but these work so great, and they have that Suntour cachet to them, and there just aren't a lot of people using them.

how about a 70's disk brake? They were produced from '74 to '77, sold the bike but kept the brake and caliper... thinking about making a downhill bike or rat-rod with it

A pair of Vittoria Superlite pedals with Cinelli toeclips and nylon screws. Sadly they aren't the hen's teeth ti spindle version. Though even the steel versions are pretty hard to find.

The 531 frame, GB stem, and wrap around seat stay might suggest it is a British frame with French parts...
