L'Ombra New Jersey - April 11 C&V ride

Some of you will recall that @rhm and some of the other hard men in the East are riding a full century around central New Jersey on April 11: same day as L'Eorica Calfornia. Given the winter we've just had and the embarrassment of road miles under my BB vs time on the trainer, I'm pretty sure I'll not be in shape for the full 100 miles. Maybe others feel the same way but wanna ride along somehow.

@rhm has agreed to let a few of us join part way along the route to shadow (ie L'Ombra) the peloton and enjoy a great section of New Jersey in the spring. If you would like to join us then send me a PM and we'll coordinate the details off line (still being worked out - about a month yet to go).

The vague plan is to meet, mid morning, somewhere in the Freehold, NJ area off I195, east of Trenton. We'll intercept the peloton (recently slowed down by a nice big breakfast) and follow, at a respectful distance, but enjoy the scenery, being free on C&V bikes and all the camaraderie. We'll all stop at some nice but flea bitten joint for lunch (buy there or bring your own), top the fluids and set out again. I anticipate L'Ombra will ride ~60 miles around and back to our cars. We'll then wave to the hard men as we grow real small in their rear view mirrors and they grind out the balance of the big miles. Should be a great day.

Please let me know, via PM, and include your email address so we can get well sorted. Again, this is a fully unsupported ride. No SAG wagons, no team cars, no umbrella girls, no sectioned oranges or bananas. Get your C&V bike in top shape and bring your own parts, tools, water, fuel. We'll have route sheets and great attitudes. Hope to see you there.

Oh, Thanks Rudi. Great Idea!!!!

Interesting, this is right in my neck of the woods. Depending on the kids sports that weekend, I may be able to attend.

Rudi has put together an AWESOME gathering of east coast C&V'ers for this ride on April 11th. If you're not quite ready for The Full Monty, join Prowler's group for the larger part of what will, I'm sure, prove to be a truly Epic Event!

I'lll be there... As I've not been able to do much riding of late, new house and horrible weather being the main culprits, I might even be riding with you for this one @Prowler.

Hmmm...I have not been on the bike in 6 years. Maybe between now and then I can get an hour or two on the old Kreitlers and join in the ride. For a mile or two...

Just *bumping* this thread. I'm looking forward to the ride on the 11th. I had time for a 40-mile ride yesterday before sunset. It was pretty out. Here's to hoping to get in one "80-ish" mile ride prior to the second week of April...

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone. Phil

Sounds interesting. I've received clearance from HQ for the trip.
(I'm all for the food. My legs are not going to forgive me as fast as my stomach will.)

Terrain OK for an older friction bike?

Hah! I thought L'Eroica was on the 12th, and have been training for such. This new information really throws a wrench in my training regimen.

I'm not the authority on the California ride but I recall it was a weekend event, April 11 and 12. Best to check their online info and the thread here on C&V. Our meager east cost event is April 11 and we'll hold the 12th for a rain day in the event of unhappy weather. I don't suppose the even think about 'rain dates' out in California.

As for the terrain, don't worry about it. This is one flat ride.

The last time I cycled in central/southern New Jersey the only hills were landfills and highway overpasses. This ride could be just a perfect time. Good roads, plenty of sun and shade, light traffic and great folks to ride with and C&V bikes to admire.

I'm in training now. Nuther 12 hilly miles done today.

Wait, is this the anti-L'Orica, or L'Orica East? 'Cause if I have to do that funny spare tire wrap around my arms, or stick my pinky out when I drink beer, I'll have no part of it.

That musta be some other ride some where. This one is the anti February, anti black ice, anti shoveling heavy snow, anti mounds of salt at the intersections cuz the trucks don't shut the gate when they stop, anti 14 foot high piles of brown ice filled with gravel, anti stuck at home on the trainer and anti single digits and frozen wheel bearing grease. You know, at one point my floor tire pump froze, fer pete's sake!

I suppose that's kinda negative, huh? I'm dreaming of those warm country roads with spring well sprung and everything green and new. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

No way, here at C&V we imagine ourselves to be real men.
You may have to do the spare tire thing, but not the pinky.

Might be more like L' Orca, if I don't lose some weight.

If I'm correct, this is not far from the home of legendary A.Winthrop, chronicler of Centurions.
Also, one JunkYardBike (there must be a Krispy Kreme nearby).

Thanks for the heads up on the terrain. The Lotus it is.

I'm ready. 48 miles yesterday with a couple thousand feet of climbing thrown in on my '88 Cannondale SR500, the one that still has 6 speed double 105.

Did not stick my pinkie out when swilling a post-ride Leffe, although it was still highly enjoyable!

You guys are cracking me up! L'Ombra, L'Orica, L'Orca!

I wish I could join you. I'll be on the pan handle coast of NW Florida and my biggest challenge will be wind and drunk co-eds. Should I call my ride L'Ocean or L'Vacumn?

Bump. Less than 3 weeks until the fine day. Still pretty cold (teens again tonight) but no snow for a couple of days so hope springs eternal. If anyone has been on the fence but now wants to join us send me a PM and I'll get back to you.

I cannot wait. @rhm has done a excellent job planning a nice route and collecting some excellent company to ride with.

Bump again. I'm riding the Lotus, but would sure like to sell it while I'm there.
It needs a good home, but I'm not giving it away. Very nice bike.
