Need help from the Code breakers , Peugeot bike

Hi I need help

I have just build a Bike for my wife based on a Peugeot frame. The fram was in ok condition from the start BUT was hand brush painted så no decals or anything was visible, I used some paint stripper to get to the main decal so I know its a Peugeot.

First I thought it was Optimum but looking at pictures I find that this could not be true (it has internal cable in upper tube)

Then I thought it was a Criterium but Im not so sure right now

The Serial number is Y303 05690

Can anyone help me identify the bike and satisfy my curiosity

Niels

Niels, you will get better answers if you post some pictures of your bike.

I surely will post pictures of the Bike, as you see it has been repainted

And a sorry to the purist but the frame was already painted with a brush when found it and parts where not salvageable.

Please post outer seat tube diameter (28.0mm if French, 28.6 if made almost anywhere else), as well as outer seat post diameter. This will help us sort out what quality of frame tubing was used. The integral derailleur hanger is a positive sign, but these eventually became common on some lower and mid level models. Crisp closeup shots of the dropouts and the seat cluster may also be helpful.

I have taken some extra pictures and some measurements

seat post is 25 mm I think a 25,2 will fit as well but have not tried.

The outer seat tube diameter is in the middle 29 (could be 28,8 mm as it is including powder-coating) but at the top it has a smaller diameter as it is possible to see on the photo

The Upper Tube is 28,9

Main tube 32,4

The lugless construction and forged dropouts suggest a mid-level frame from the mid to late 1980s. Beyond that, there's not much to go on.

As the bike where fittet wit shimano 100 rx I guessed so far and as I have seen similar branded Optimum I thought it was one of those but the internal wire does not fit that as far as I know.

Do I understand correctly that the serial number does not give a clue ?

Many of the members here are American (myself included) or Canadian, and I've found that people post weird bikes from here in Scandinavia (I'm just across the Öresund in Sweden) all the time that don't match the catalogs and knowledge that members have accumulated.

I wouldn't worry so much about it. It's a nice, tasteful build!

I haven't previously seen an 1980s Peugeot with a unicrown fork like that. Admittedly European models are unfamiliar to some of us (like me), since Peugeot left the US market sometime in the late 1980s. Looking through the French 1989 catalog, I see internal top tube cable routing, but not a unicrown fork. Anyway, I like it. Nice clean build.

Thanks for the words, an yea I will just enjoy the bike (or my wife will) and leave it by that ;-)

And then get one with planning the next build in my head, I think it will be a mountain bike frame solid front slim balled tires made for fast city runs ;-)
