My second Grand Touring

i like the ones with derailleur hangers. is it vitus?

never seen shifters like that on a moto. are they symmetrics?

cool paint. and that wheelset is quite the upgrade. crazy price.

jeirvine 03-22-15 09:51 PM

I had that bike in that size, and it was a very nice rider. If I hadn't found a '72 Grand Record in my size, I'd still have it. I too pondered barons, but the rubber bar wrap would need to be removed (not necessarily a bad thing.) mine had DT power shifters and Vx RD and they worked great with that triple crank. Enjoy.

Henry III 03-22-15 11:29 PM

Oh your one of those guys. Lol.

eschlwc 03-23-15 01:17 AM

wish i had been 'one of those guys' this past weekend, missing out on a le champion in my size for $150.

I have a 1980 Grand Jubile. I built it up from a bare frame that I got on eBay back in 2007. I used mostly French components.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=440645 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=440646 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=440647

The frame is the same as your Grand Touring except that it's made of butted Vitus 172 tubing rather than Vitus 888 with straight gage main tubes. They were probably both made out of the same steel.

The Grand Touring may be a little smoother riding. The ends of the main tubes are thinner because they're not butted so they're slightly more flexible.

My frame was supposed to be a 56cm but it's closer to 58cm center to top. It has a very long 60cm top tube too. It's more of a touring model like yours than a club rider like earlier Grand Jubiles which have shorter chain stays and top tubes.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=440650

The frame is a little to big for me so I'm thinking about thinning the herd a little.

hey, verktyg, what's the wheelbase and seat tube (both in inches, c-c) of your '80 jubilé?

.

edit... verktyg, sure it's an '80? that was the first year of the 6-speed (126mm drops), but bottle bosses didn't come 'til '81 (according to the catalog). also the '80 didn't have brazed shifter bosses. when did those come?

Pretty cool. (You did notice that the stem is pulled up too high, right?) The owner seems to have known a little bit about bikes and doing upgrades.

Someone educate me, as I am not really Stronglight-knowledgeable. Is that crank 110mm BCD? It looks smaller. Or is that a trick of the light?

daf1009 03-23-15 05:37 AM

Wow...finally met "one of those guys"...while I congratulate you on the bike, not on the method of purchase. This is what makes Craigslist the "evil list of Craig"...put yourself in the other guy's shoes...he thinks he has a deal with this seller...time to meet, etc. And then..."oh, I can be there 5 minutes sooner, so I am going to swoop in and purchase this..." While the other guy is driving to the meeting place to purchase...I have been that guy...have everything set up and then someone swoops in.

"Early bird gets the worm"...sounds like rationalization to me...

I started to say "not to offend"...but...realistically...I find this behavior offensive...so, I guess I cannot say that. Who knows? I may be in the minority here...probably am...and really do not want to start anything, but, having been the guy that was "on the way" when someone else jumped in...it is quite disturbing to see this group "celebrating" doing that...

Who knows who the "other guy" was? Maybe he was someone that wanted to get back into cycling, or get into to begin with...and now he has to start over...maybe he doesn't because of frustration. On the other hand, maybe he was the "dreaded flipper"...but who knows?

Not 110 bcd. That's a stronglight 99 crank (really nice lightweight cranks) with a 86 bcd.

+1.

I appreciate when people set a time and honor it. I try to then do the same when selling anything. That person who lost out- perhaps they could have been there earlier but didn't set a time for earlier because the seller suggested the time. That has happened to me- just absurd since I lost out on the bike to someone who showed up earlier, even though I could have picked it up earlier.

Meh, it happens all the time. Its craigslist. I have been on my way many times and gotten a call or shown up and the bike is sold. At the end of the day, they are a bunch of old bikes. If you get snaked, its just the universe's way of evening things out. When you get a great deal and the seller undercharges the current market value do you throw more money at them? Most don't, me included!

It's 86mm BCD, post-1982 production so it uses a standard 22mm x 1mm extractor.

Me too. Although I'm careful to always say something like "I can come over right now, with the cash," the seller usually prefers to meet at some point after work hours and we set a time. And I sure as hell expect the bike to be waiting there when I arrive. That's just common courtesy.

Actually, yes, I have "thrown" money at them at times...my mantra is to be fair...that is all...and while we can all rationalize that "meh, it happens all the time. Its craigslist." My point here is that we should not "celebrate" someone for making it that way...

"Fair" is also a rationalization. Unless you paid the seller the equivalent of the what a market survey, say on ebay, determnes the going rate is, "fair" just makes you feel better about not paying full price.

Most of the posts here are predicated on "getting a deal", "got a great deal", "who wants to trade, so I don't have to pay", "Where do I find (INSERT PART HERE) cheap online so I don't have to pay my LBS their outrageous prices", etc. It is the way of the world. Sometimes people are nice and respectful of your time/effort and keep a promise, sometimes not. I don't let people jump ahead if I am selling something and made a promise to another buyer and I don't push to be first in line if I am not. Either way, its a buch of old bikes.

So again I say, "meh!":)

Well a bunch of things in life could be dismissed/rationalized with this approach. Doesn't mean they should be though.
As for giving someone more money for an undercharged bike- I haven't, but I also don't try to talk em down. I have noticed that when bikes around me are priced low and in good/potentially good working order, its typically because the seller just wants it gone. That is the seller's value at the time given their needs/wants. I pay full value.

I don't think I will ever understand why people are so accepting of a lack of common courtesy. Im not that old, but apparently its that time in my life to complain about how society is going downhill and to yell at kids to get off my lawn.

What did you expect? Maybe you should have just made the thread just about the Motobecane itself, instead of embellishing it with your detailed war story about how you successfully screwed-over someone else who had wanted the bike. Your original post had more to do with that story than the bike.

In the end, I fault the seller for not giving the first buyer dibs on the bike.

+1 Well said...and...on this point, maybe some of us are self-righteous...it would be nice to have some righteousness out there...instead of talking about how we "got one over on someone...by five minutes!"

this. it's neither buyer's fault. if the seller said one thing and did another, he hasn't much integrity.

or ... he was bending the truth, and there never was "another guy on the way."

"It's not as if there was a contract, real or implied with anyone until there was money in his hand."

i don't think that's true. i think all that's needed is a valid, legal offer and legal acceptance. consideration must only be promised.

It looks identical to the Grand Jubile in the 1980 catalog. Never saw a 1981 Moto catalog, they went belly up in 1981. I have part of the spec sheet for 1982...
