Looking for comfortable bibs for longer rides, anybody have any they'd recommend?

I'm in the market for a new pair of bibs that will be comfortable on longer rides, mainly the STP. I have a couple pairs of specialized bibs that were right around the $100-$120 mark but make me uncomfortable on longer rides.

I have had success with De Marchi (esp., Fondo) and Santini bibs. Nashbar has them pretty cheap. DO not really like Sugoi, Pearl Izumi and Mavic. They are OK but do not, for me, feel as comfortable on 2+ hour rides. Less than that, they are OK. For long duration, the De Marchi and Santini are great... even without chamois cream. The others listed, have needed it for me. The chamois is different on these two(D.M. and S.). Thy are shaped and I forget which one actually has 2 different materials, foam in back and a comfortable material for the men's area up front. They are a little wide but not uncomfortably. Very sculpted pad as well. All the spots I need padded are and nothing seems to rub anywhere. If you are tall (I am 6' 1"), the Santini do fit a little shorter than the De Marchi. When standing, I find the Santini to pull my shoulders down a bit but once in a riding stance, they are fine. The De Marchi's do not do this and are fine regardless. Also, I prefer a tighter fit. I weigh 200lbs, 37" waist and take XL in De Marchi and I think I recall a XXL in the Santini.

Of course, if price is no option, I have heard the Rapha and Assos are the tops but you will really pay to get them.

Castelli and Voler are my go-to bibs. I have a pair of Hincapie bibs that are nice too, but the shoulder straps aren't as snug as I like.

I bought a couple pair of Hammer-branded Voler bibs a couple years ago, and still reach for them: Bergamo Cycling Bibs - Superior Cycling Bibs | Hammer Nutrition

Assos S5 Mille factory direct for $151. If TIR size fits, these are the best bib/shorts for long rides.

I bought a pair of the Specialized RBX bibs, but I found my cheapo Bontrager Race Bibs to be more comfortable.

If you don't mind them in white trim, here is a good deal on them:

I bought three of them from there and they are my goto's now along with my first two black ones.

I wore bibs from Aero Tech last year when I made my first attempt at STP. I'll be wearing the same bibs this year at RSVP.

Good to know those worked well. I just ordered some big and tall ones, interested to see how they feel.

I have had good long rides with both Champion Systems and Primal. I do however have an issue with CS quality over the long run. I have had one chamois come apart internally in less than 2 years use. Primal shorts that I have had longer are fine and have been worn nearly as much. PI shorts that were the cheapest they make have held up for years, and were comfortable. Are you doing one day or two?

I use Assos Mille for the long rides. These are my favorite bibs.

Agree! I've tried a bunch of different bibs and nothing beats the Assos Mille. But I'd recommend the regular-length leg unless you're really tall:

I bought a pair of Aero Tech bibs last year and love them. I'm planning to buy another pair so I alternate the two pairs, and retire my shorts.

I'll be doing the 2-day ride. I did the flying wheels ride today and got a pair of velo bibs at the finish line for $60 at their sale tent. I like the material and the chamois is nice and dense, similar to my primal bibs that I wore today, which got me through the ride with ease.

I'll second the Voler vote. I bought one pair each of bibs from Voler, Aero Tech, and Bontrager to do my own comparisons. Then I bought two more Voler. They are not cheap but they are the most comfortable and they are made in the US of A (but so are Aero Tech). They almost always have some on sale, too.

I buy my bibs from boure cycling in Durango. They will have you send in measurements and custom make bibs etc... The bibs I just bought were 160.

Just got my Aerotech 3X Tall bib in, $79 - took it out for 2 and a half hours and it was very comfortable. One ride I'm sure is not enough, but I was very impressed.

I've never had bibs or pants but I ordered ATD Big Man's Bib from Aerotech Designs to try out.

I have success with Castelli and DeMarchi. Also consider trying out some chamois cream. I recently delved in to the world of cream as after I was extending my rides out to 70-80km I was getting uncomfortable. It has literally become a whole new world. I experimented with some of my bibs that were intolerable on such rides, and now they're as comfortable as can be! Remember bibs or more importantly chamois are a lot like saddles. Different ones suit different folk
