First Century Complete!!

Well at 40 years and 320 lbs. I just finished my first century! It might have been the hardest thing I ever did! I trained out to 70 miles but only about 1000 feet of climbing. The century had 3000 feet of climbing and it was mostly in a 4 mile stretch (6-10%). I did not have the correct gearing on my bike for this and had to walk most of the 10 percent grades. SAG vehicles were taking many (skinny fit) riders to the top and kept asking me if I wanted a ride. I came REALLY close to accepting it but I did not accept cause I would always remember I did it all but that one hill! Anyway I took my time and got to the 85 mile stop and did not feel good. I was running out of time to clock but just was not sure I could finish. I sat there for 20-30 minutes and thought I could try to finish but now it was really late and I had to ride 15-16 mph into a head wind the last 15 miles. I made it with 2 1/2 minutes to spare! Wow what a day!

awesome feat!! congrats on bagging the first Only way to deal with hills is to train more on them, gearing and pace is one thing but determination is key.

Congratulations.
You made the distance.
You overcame on-course difficulties.
You proved the doubters (and wannabe helpers) wrong.
You set a goal and accomplished it.
You (should have) learned something about yourself, your fitness level and your ability to persevere.

Again, congratulations.

Suggestion... the net time you go for a century, try eating something (snack, banana, nuts, energy bar) about the 70 mile point and you might feel better from that point onward.... could have been an energy/nutrition low. Just a thought.

Endurance events sometime come down to a simple mind over body approach. Sounds like that's exactly what happened. You had the focus and determination to carry on and get the century done. Congrats.
