So I DIDN'T Buy a Fairdale Goodship today...

but man I sure wanted to. Take that @dr_lha, I passed on one!

So I'm on vacation and while in Austin, I had to stop by Bike Sport Shop on Lamar as they seem to be the unofficial Fairdale headquarters. They have a ton of Fairdales on the floor including Goodships in both colors, including one in orange in my size that was on sale!

The Goodship is sweet in person. Light! I didn't weigh it but even with cheap platform pedals on, is sub 20 lbs. I'd guess in the 18lb range sans pedals. And the color is sweet too. It's a shade brighter than my Black Mountain Cycles road bike. I liked the Fairdale orange better than mine.

So I test rode it and it was just as sweet as all the good steel frames I've ridden. The demo area was rough and I sought out bumps to feel the steel doing its thing to smooth out the ride. The geometry was nice. Just well thought out bike. I would immediately replace the saddle and seat post and probably the bars as the FSA stuff was sort of meh, but the rest of the bike was very nice.

I'd love to buy that bike but I feel like it would be redundant to what I already have. I thought others might like to hear about firsthand experience with the Goodship though.

What is different than the one you have now? Different steel grade?

That is a sexy bike that has been on my radar for a while. I imagine it's somewhat aggressive? Relatively twitchy compared to an endurance bike or the adventure bike I wound up ordering? I'd love to try the Goodship but around here they seem to be special order only.

The frame may be the same, not sure, but lighter everything else likely.

I didn't find it to be twitchy, but it did handle more precisely than my Black Mountain Cycles bike. It felt very similar to my Gunnar Roadie with Enve 2.0 fork.

Good that you showed restraint -- As a fan of steel, i'd almost recommend you pick up a nice C&V steel machine to go along with your stable of more modern machinery

An early to mid 90's lugged Italian frameset (stating that time period as it will already have 130mm rear spacing in case you want to use a modern group ) - or a Paramount, Waterford, Merckx, Bob Jackson --- etc etc

Nuthin. No new bikes since the last build. Thinking about selling the Gunnar though.

Figured this was worth a bump. Saw a Goodship in the wild this weekend at a big T-Shirt ride. My buddy and I pulled up next to him and talked to him for a while as he in interested in possibly getting one.

The Goodship owner was really happy with the bike. His story was a lot like mine (had a Roubaix he was happy with until rode a steel bike) as he had a Trek Domane that was his main bike and after buying/riding the Goodship for a while, he put his Domane up for sale.

I think that was the last push my friend needed to order one. Looking forward to seeing how he likes it.
