On the alcohol front, try having a seltzer w lime in your hands all night. You'll have something to sip on and it looks like a gin/vodka and tonic, so it's incognito. If you do have a drink, don't beat yourself up too much; it is a holiday party and you've done a great job the past couple weeks. A little moderation is okay if it's not a trigger. Only you know the best course here...

Congrats on the progress so far, and have fun Saturday! (I'm a little envious you get to do a metric)
Yes. I will definitely eat and drink before and during the ride. I have home made oatmeal energy bars and banana oatmeal cookies I make and rice cakes with egg whites and some shredded turkey breast. I also usually bring a banana too and have some small pickles if they are available.

As to the evening drink. I haven't given it too much thought, but I do know myself. If I have a drink or two, I'll start eating. Alcohol isn't a direct problem for me, but the resulting overeating makes it an indirect problem for me. And seltzer with a lime is what I usually drink if I'm not drinking alcohol. I just like it.

Today, Friday, 12/9/2016, I commit to appropriate eating. For me this includes a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet with no binging.

I ate one more carb serving than originally planned, and a serving of ice cream last night. When I finished that, I went back for a second serving. I scooped out a big ball of ice cream, put it back because I made a commitment yesterday and ate only an extra teaspoon. It wasn't perfect, but it was a small victory.

Today, specifically tonight, I will double my carbohydrate intake in preparation for tomorrow's ride. I'll probably have a medium potato and a serving of rice.

It's a bit late, but here we go... Today, Saturday, 12/10/2016, I commit to appropriate eating. This means a moderate protein, higher vegetable diet with an adequate amount of carbs. I increased carbs this morning in preparation for the metric century I did.

I thought about doing the full century, but my slow riding provided me with no one to draft off. They were all faster than me. We were also going into the wind for the ride back, and I wouldn't have made it. I opted for the metric at the breakup at mile 45.

I need to watch myself at the holiday party tonight.

Today, Sunday 12/11/2016, I commit to appropriate eating. For me this includes a low carb, moderate protein and higher veggie diet with no binge eating.

Last night, at the party, I over ate but didn't binge. I'm beginning to see myself slide here with late entries and more eating. I did ride a metric century yesterday and a shorter ride today, but I need to be mindful of what I'm eating.

On another note, Im just wondering if this thread has run its course or are people still interested? It has been helping me with accountability but hopefully it's not annoying. As stated in the original post, if anyone else wants to commit one day to healthier eating, please feel free to join in once or daily. This thread was intended to be a place to commit one day by anyone who wants to commit.

This is a great post. Congrats to those that have lost & congrats to those that are on the journey.

As someone had already posted, exercise is important for weight loss but it's not the most important piece of the puzzle. I myself lost 120 lbs in 8 months with zero exercise. What you put in your body will determine your overall health & weight. Unfortunately what I did to lose the weight wasn't a long term solution (which is the reason why people struggle with keeping the weight off) so I've gained about half of it back. We must change our diet (not go on a diet) in order to lose weight & keep it off.

It seems unfair some can eat the junk that made us fat but they don't gain weight. Oh well, it is what it is.

It's all about fruits & veggies & more veggies. Stay away from dairy & sugar & learn to read ingredients to identify what's actually going into your body.

A good thing to start doing is only shopping on the outside perimeter of your supermarket. 90% of that area is the fresh real food not the packaged & boxed fake stuff.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Today, Monday 12/12/2016, I commit to appropriate eating. For me that means a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet with no binge eating.

This past week, I lost 1.5 pounds, for a total of 3.5 so far in two weeks. But the focus is on today, not yesterday or tomorrow.

Today 12 December 2016, I commit to eating properly to me which means back on a low carb diet and more exercise. I have gained back all of the 35 pounds I had lost plus an additional 12. Had to go back on 3 times a day meds for my diabetes.
Oh how much I dislike this time of year and all the holiday foods that my skinny family members love to prepare.

Today I commit to eating properly, which for me means keeping daily calories under 2000 (with a goal of around 1500). It's the drive-by snacking that does me in. I commit to zero drive-bys.

@Bassmanbob, the thread is important, and even if it ends up being just a running trail of your own posts, it'll be a public (accountable?) declaration of commitment, which helps. That being said, I know it's being read more than replied to, so keep it up

Today, 12/13/2016 I commit to appropriate eating. For me, this means a low carb diet with no binge eating. recent increased stress at work has me concerned with an increased potential for binge eating. I needed to write this post this afternoon to remind myself that today I DON'T NEED to binge to cope with the stress.

Superdex and odleo: great job on committing yesterday!

Today, Wednesday, 12/14/16 I commit to appropriate eating. For me that means no binging and eating a low carb, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet.

I'm dealing with a ton of stress with work, and the work seems to be going very slowly. I may recommit at some time during the day if I am not feeling right.

So your commitment has inspired a few. I would say "Good Luck", but how about this, work hard, deal with rejection (rejection of those urges) and please keep us abreast of your progress. Thank you

I have been slowed down due to some health problems which has resulted in weight gain. I am no longer able to ride off the weight. I also love a good brew; however, it does seem like that is the easiest place to start with reducing calorie intake.

I have enjoyed this thread; thanks Bassmanbob. I like the daily commitment approach; something I have not really put any thought to before. It keeps one from biting off too much at a time (double entrendre intended). Sure I can do this for a day. One day at a time may be a bit of a cliche but that is how we all live our lives. Brings a whole knew approach to seizing the day

Do you have a chance to go for a walk? Or some way to 'disconnect' during the day? Good luck, stress is a hard component to battle. We're all supporting you

Today I commit to appropriate eating. For me that means keeping daily calories under 2000. Yesterday was not a good food day, happy hour with a good friend and poor snacking. Today I also commit to getting on the rollers in the basement. UGH.

Today, Friday 12/16/16 I commit to appropriate eating. For me this means a low carb, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet.

Yesterday, I did not make the commitment, as I was late to work and couldn't log in until later. By that time, I forgot. I over ate yesterday and topped it off with some binging after dinner. I've been up half the night, in part due to work related stress but also thanks to my over eating yesterday.

So today, again, I commit to appropriate eating. Yesterday is in the past.

Today, Saturday 12/17/2016, I commit to appropriate eating. For me that means a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet with no binge eating.

It has become clear to me over the last three weeks that in order for this effort to be successful, my plans are going to have to evolve. I'm going to need to better define my appropriate eating definition, perhaps with the inclusion of daily caloric limits and a better commitment to physical fitness. Since last weekend, I cycled only on Thursday; I'm going for my group ride this morning. This week's work stress distracted me from my own health. I may institute walking on days I can't ride. I can also return to commuting to work by bike twice this week.

But right now, I will concentrate on today. This weekend I will modify my plans for the coming couple of weeks.

My experience is that I am more successful dieting if I commit to a fixed calorie target each day. I figure my maintenance calorie level is about 2000/day for my physique. I shoot for 1500 or a little less when I am dieting so I get that steady 1-2 pound weight loss that most experts seem to recommend. Not a crash diet. This is sustainable for me and I am pretty diligent with looking at calorie counts wherever I can on labels, menus, etc.

The discipline of the hard number makes it harder for me too lie to myself that a little extra something-something is ok. If you are like me, you will get a sense pretty soon of what you can/should eat vs. lying to yourself and cheating.

This first paragraph is a very good. Others have said it here in this thread, and I want to thank them too. Your second paragraph is frequently what I do to justify (lie) to myself that unnecessary food.

Today, Sunday 12/18/2016 I commit to appropriate eating. For me this includes a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet.

I'm going to include more to my appropriate eating definition. I'll either add a dairy limitation or calorie restriction. But for today, I'm finishing out my third week by concentrating on today.

Today, Monday, 12/19/2016 I commit to appropriate eating. For me this includes a low carbohydrate, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet with a new restriction of cheese to no more than two servings per day.

Other than being a carbohydrate addict, I love cheese. I can eat it multiple times a day, and I do. The combo of carbs and cheese, and I'm in indulgence heaven. Pizza is my crack. If I'm at a pizza party and plan on eating two slices, I can easily eat 5 or 6 by the time it's put away. Mac and cheese, crackers and cheese, bagel and cream cheese, lasagna, etc... I love it all, but I am destroying myself with it.

Cheese has lots of heart unhealthy fat and salt. I need neither. I will attempt cheese free days, but limit myself to up to two servings.

Good news. I lost another 2 pounds this week, for a total of 5.5 pounds in three weeks. I'm still limiting cheese, though. I need large quantities of it like I need malaria.

Good job! Congrats on the success. Set goals & reward yourself for hitting them just make sure the reward is bike parts & not food. Lol.

Today 12/19/16 I commit myself to eating no more than 1500 calories. I will drink 2 meal replacement shakes & eat a 3rd meal while snacking on fruit between meals. I know this is not sustainable long term but I will change my eating habits during this process so when I do go back to eating 3 meals I won't need to count calories.

I will admit my main goal right now is rapid weight loss. I also know some "experts" recommend against it but I'm ok with it. I've done this before but I gained half of what I lost back because I didn't change my eating habits. We can't expect to keep doing what we've been doing & get different results.

Keeping weight off & staying healthy is a lifestyle change not just something we change for a short time.

Good luck to everyone becoming healthier!!!

nice work!

today I commit to appropriate eating, which is keeping daily calories under 2000. Yesterday was a blow-out: my daughter's 6th birthday party. While in all her 6-year old adrenaline excitement she didn't eat much of anything, I had some of everything in sight...

I also commit to the rollers.

Today, Tuesday 12/20/2016, I commit to appropriate eating, which for me includes a low carbohydrate and cheese, moderate protein and higher vegetable diet with no binge eating.

It's going to be a difficult week. People for whom I provide my services are bringing in all kinds of cookies, cakes, candy and wine. My staff have been eating this stuff, but I've only had a little home made peanut brittle yesterday-- three or four pieces the size of half dollar coins. My staff renamed it Christmas Crack.

Just today, I need to eat appropriately. Just today.
