Local Mountain Views

So there was a comment by Scoobierex in another thread about the mountain road views. Figured I would post a few thingies that show the roads.

Feb 2016 with a local Ron on GMR (Glendora Mtn Rd). I went to Cow Canyon Saddle but didn't quite get 5,000 ft of gain so I turned around at the bottom and started up for a bit to hit my goal of 5,000 ft. Ron went down Baldy Rd (steep fast dh 7 miles or so). I went back down GMR for the views and switchbacks (21 mile curvy descent).

A buddy Matt, 196 pounds complaining about low spoke count wheels and breaking spokes. Mavic Ksyriums.

This one shows some good shots of the road on the descent. My buddies are not real good at descending so i's hard to stay behind them for the video shots.

Damnation Alley, Hwy.38
Not shown in photo: it was about 90 at the time this photo was taken. The Alley was earning it's name.

Top of GRR.
Not shown in photo: it was 28 according to the Garmin, but my fingertips thought possibly even colder.

Nice pics!

We did some training rides while prepping for Ride Around the Bear that went up Damnation Alley to Forest Falls. Darn right it earns its name! It was May and blazing hot on Damnation Alley. In the 7 mile stretch, I went through two large water bottles and it was not enough. I don't know what the temp was but I felt like crying!

Damnation Alley was part of Breathless Agony but no way was I going to use energy taking pictures on that section!

From my doorstop to the campground at Forest Falls (just below the Vivian Creek Trailhead) it's just a hair over 21 miles... with 4,600ft of vertical. I end up using 3 bottles on the way up, refill at a friend's house right below the campground, and can usually make it home on 2 bottles, as there's a whole bunch of coasting.

I still consider 38/Valley of the Falls to be much tougher than GMR/GRR. There are flat bits and even little descents to catch your breath on GMR. Once you pass the ranger station on 38, it's uphill until the road ends.

I agree! The ride I did with buddies was from Calimesa (Stater Bros parking lot ?? along the fwy) to the top of Forest Falls. Luckily my wife drove support for us or I would have died of thirst on Damnation Alley.

Not sure of the course but we went through Cherry Valley (?), I know we went up Oak Glen, down to Bryant, Damnation Alley to Vivian Creek Trailhead (end of the road). I used the same bike I used on Ride Around the Bear and Breathless Agony. My old Cannondale with a 53/39 - 12/25 cassette. It was real tough on the last stretch. I remember going through a little town there, maybe a general store (?). I barely made it up with the gearing while having to stand. My wife pulled up on the side of me and asked how I was feeling. I think that was the first and only time I gave her the finger! Joking!

I was trying so hard to get up that I couldn't even answer. I have never felt anything like that on GMR or GRR.

The bike and gearing I used on those rides. I didn't even feel anything like the last stretch of FF on The Bear or BA. One of the guys with a Garmin on that ride said it was a 33% grade. I didn't have a Garmin a the time but it sure felt like 20+.

I must say, I'm kinda curious as to what transpired in the 33 minutes between my post and him getting banned. This thread seemed innocuous enough.

Maybe someone in the photos didn't want to be? Don't know. Stunning views though!
