Well ... I came up short on the Strava July Fondo ... have another weekend left so we'll see. We've had SO much rain lately, that our local river is over it's banks in several spots, and it shut down a couple of roads that I would have included in my routes today. The first 25 miles were easy. Went to do a different loop for the next segment and it was hillier, and then I did some exploring because two of my potential roads were closed. So
when I came back to home to fill up bottles and possibly eat more, at 48 miles, I felt a cramp starting in my right calf, and it was getting warmer and terribly humid.

My wife encouraged me to stop ... and she was right. So I said I wanted to do another two miles to make it an even 50 (ended up being 51). And as I rode back after that I knew it was the right decision.

All in all, I'm pleased with today.

Well things aren't going that great. Had a decent ride going last night. Then I heard something squeaking. I rode on by myself a bit and my wife passed me as I was clearing my nose. I caught back up to her and asked if she could hear it. I decided that it would be best if I finished my ride with her. I finally realized it was my rear wheel and stopped to make sure. Yup, its not trued up, no spoke broken though. We press on home. I pull the wheel off so I can take it to the LBS. I realize something is rolling around internal to it. I must have broken a nipple and the end is in there. I ever tell anyone that I hate dealing with wheels? It's a Velocity Dyad that I had built for me, they use them on Tandems! I'm not that big of a Clyde! I broke a front one last year! I weigh about 215 now.

July 3 - 19.9 miles
July 7 - 19.8 miles
July 13 - 19.9 miles
July 14 - 19.9 miles
July 20 - 20.0 miles
July 24 - 19.9 miles

119.4 miles of 250 miles

I broke a spoke a month or so ago now ... and did the same thing ... it broke at the nipple. In fact, the spoke didn't even give way completely until I got a block from my house.

Took it to a shop about 20 minutes away (downside to living in rural America, no bike shop in town), and he fixed it and got it back to me in a couple of days.

But I kept hearing something, like rattling now and then, in the same wheel. Finally had a flat on the same wheel so I took it off to replace the tube and I kept hearing it. The guy fixed the spoke but left the nipple rattling around inside the rim! And not wanting to take off the rim tape, I had to do some intricate maneuvering to get the nipple to the valve hole so I could get it out.

Not sure I'll go back to that shop again.

I just dropped it off at the LBS near my work, they will have it fixed today! Of course I don't plan to ride today because of weather and what not. But I know I can get it put back together and be ready to ride. Although it costs more than I wanted to pay they will true the wheel, hopefully they will check the tension on all the spokes too. Just frustrating to have wheel issues. $30 later.
