Gravel Bike for Big Guy

I'm 6'5" and 260 lbs (hopefully decreasing) and am looking to supplement my mountain bike with something more road friendly. For this bike, the rides would be a mix of roads, paved bike paths, gravel paths and perhaps some light single track trails. The newer lines of gravel bikes seem to hit the spot, but I'm open to suggestions. I've looked at the Trek Checkpoint - but it has a combined rider/bike/equipment weight limit of 275 lbs, which puts me right at or over the limit. Not sure how much of an issue that is, either.

this is from a few weeks ago. Post #3 i have a link to a few good finds/list

64cm or above - Road/Gravel Bike

you should be fine on almost any bike you pick, the wheels may be the weak point. But you won't know w/o putting miles on it both pave and dirt.

In terms of sizing, this is a great resource https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...gid=2109355492

Weight limits are usually lawyer or wheelset or a combination of both. The frames should be well and truly good enough. Check the wheels and switch out or just ride the hell out of them

Many thanks. The spreadsheet is an incredible resource and I can’t imagine the time spent putting to together.

Surly Straggler. Or a Midnight Special. Depending on how rough your trails happen to be.

I'm the same weight, but, not as tall. I have been riding a Specialized Sequoia Elite (58cm) for the last 18monts. I have enjoyed every minute on the bike. Had some rim crack at the spoke nipples after only 500miles. Specialized replaced them with I think the same rims on the Diverge. I have about 1500miles on them with no rim issues.

Specialized AWOL, size XL. Adjust stem as necessary. The AWOLs are bombproof do-anything bikes. I’ve replaced the wheels on mine with Rhyno’s 36/32 and regularly roll at up to 300lbs fully loaded. After close to 14k miles I still smile every time I get on it.

I’m 290 and ride a Trek Checkpoint ALR5. I’m using it as a commuter bike and I ride the c&o towpath on the weekends. I have almost 1000 trouble free mile so far. Knock on wood...

6'4", was 278 or so when I started riding, have had no issues with fit or weight on a 61cm Jamis Renegade. I cannot imagine any of the steel models being an issue for you, or really just about any other steel gravel bike for that matter. The official weight limit is in the owner's manual somewhere IIRC, but I am pretty sure it is at least 300 lbs.

Thanks

Thanks for all of the input. Have a Checkpoont on order; will see how it fits and feels when it arrives. I’ve been a straight bar mountain bike guy for a while, so the drop bars will be a new adventure entirely.

Hey. I was wondering if you could possibly add these new bikes to your spreadsheet? Much appreciated if you can. Thanks for putting that together, it's really cool.

Whoa! Those are huge. Not cheap, but nobody else carries a stock size for riders up to 7'3".

It may take you a ride or two to get used to the drops, but I think you will fall in love with the hoods immediately!

YEP^^^ hoods are great, drops take some practice or getting used too. Keep using the drops though, they are great too.

Yeah not bad for a full titanium bike though! Thanks for adding them.
Also, there is the KHS Flite 747 road bike in XXL and XXXL if you haven't added those to a road bike chart yet. I could get you stack and reach if you need it.
And then there is the KHS BNT 29er mountain bike which is XXL or XXXL too.
