Welcome to August everyone! The dog days are upon us, stay cool. This month's Roman numeral is particularly fitting to this forum. :) |
dang a new month already!
|
I am so OVER this heat. I rode to work on Monday and it wasn't terrible but so HUMID already. I showered at work and it was tough to get dry even inside in the A/C. Rode home and it was about 90 degrees...got home and I got inside the house and the impact of the heat and humidity hit me. I could not stop sweating. I jumped in shower with cold water. I could not get dry and continued to sweat even after shower. Hate not having A/C at times like this. Don't hate not having the electricity bill tho. So I've put off riding to work until we get more reasonable temps.
|
I was nice and cool here for the last half of July, high temps ranged from 70- mid 80's. This month the first 10 days are returning to the high 80's and 90's. I guess that means riding early in the morning.

I rode my second double century this past weekend. We started at about 7 PM in Ridgecrest and rode through the night till the next day. It was very hot at the start and we had a long evening ahead of us.
I was pretty strong till about mile 123 in Lone Pine (about 6:30 AM) and only had the return on the 395 back to Ridgecrest. The high temps and lack of sleep really took over at that point and the last 60 miles or so we're cruel. Hot, tired, sleepy, feet that felt like they were stepping on pins every time I pedaled and 2 flat tires about 8 miles from the finish in about 110 degree heat made for a very slow finish. https://www.strava.com/activities/17...S&v=1533101520 |

So far I've been doing OK and keeping my mileage up, weekend rides starting at 0800, so I leave the house at 0715. Did a metric on Sunday to HB and back, along the coast helps but still had to ride inland to go home. Hopefully heading out around 5:30 this afternoon for Portola hill repeats. Did them last week and it was OK as the sun angle was low. Drank 2 full bottles over 29 miles and 2,000 feet! |
Going uphill here. Starting out at about 7,000’ should help?! |
Hey I'm XL, can I be in this thread?

Looks like this September's adventure will be a repeat of my 2014 Vienna, OH to Philly tour, with one or two modifications.

last nights group MTB ride had 17 riders, all good skill sets, but man there was a bunch of re grouping, 1h6min worth of it with 2h31m moving time
mostly single track, allot which I haven't ridden on nor will now how to find again. I was just following wheels and trying not to crash. I failed on the later and front wheel rode off the trail and vanished into thin air. Dragged my knee pretty good with one foot still clipped into the moving bike. |
What group and where did you ride?
I'm almost certainly too slow to try to keep up with any group (with good skill sets), but always interested in learning new trails |
PQ at 6, It was my 2nd ride with them. Last week was about 13 riders.
They move about 10-11mph ave, 26 miles and 1800ft vertical, short punchy climbs https://www.strava.com/activities/1743962345 |
Ah, the wed night PQ group. I rode with them once. The one guy I knew led the B group, which turned out to be just me and my wife. We had a nice ride, the three of us. (that guy I met because he lives along my commute, and also bikes to work sometimes)

Did a couple rides in Cannon Beach, OR in the cooler weather. I discovered I don't have the legs to climb out of the bowl there and go down the highway.

How are y'all not heat acclimated yet? I genuinely can't remember the last ride I did that ended with the temp below 100º... wait, I rode to the beach a couple weeks back, so that ride. But anything near home, hot. I've gotten used to buying water at least once a ride, around mile 40. By this point in the IE summer, 90º feels like a cool breeze.

We had a little break in temp today. Only 88 when I got home just before noon and I needed just 3 bottles needed to do a metric. Weds evening I needed 2 bottles to go 28 miles. |
Ordered Celeste bottle cages. They warned me about this. I don’t have the bike yet, though it did leave the import facility in Memphis on FedEx... At least they are the same ones Lotto-Jumbo uses, though they seem to like white. |
amazingly got a weekend ride in, been forever since I've done so. A buddy is leaving us to got to Ohio State for 4yrs to become a doc. He already finished 4yr at cal state. He's loves climbs, like stupid 15-24%grade steep climbs. We did 43 miles with 4700ft vertical. I had 1200ft vertical in the first 30mins from his hours. No mountains. just really steep res road that looked like @TrojanHorse driveway
Capped off with jumping in the pool at his house, some pimg pong smack talking and cold beers. Good times. He was one of my team mates with I did the Rapha Gentleman's ride in LA in 2013, the start of riding roadies in the dirt for me. Spent ALLLLLL day yesterday after church putting in new shocks on the lexus landcrusier fox shocks, OME springs, diff drop kit, and SwayAway torsion bars https://farm1.staticflickr.com/938/4...d9513aab_b.jpg |
splurged w/ some REI points and got a new NiteRider Lumina 110boost coming. Ready for night season!! My weds group MTB I started joining rode til past 9pm last week so I think I need more then bar mount light on those single tracks. Now I got a brighter light for the helmet. The 4yo Lumina 600 will got to backup/loader duty.
Makes me wonder what is coming out for Interbike Next month with these bright lights going on sale for $67 vs normally MSRP $99 (which is already a bargin per lumens ratio) Maybe a 14-1500 lumen version in the same package size? |
