It’s March, the days are getting longer, hopefully it will be getting warmer and drier (at least here in California)!

Isn't Marcy your wife? I'm glad to hear she's happy. Surprised, but glad!

69 and cloudy when I went out this afternoon. Did some exploring of dirt and gravel trails around my house. They are a bit of a mess due to recent weather. But I did finally find the connection from the Aliso Creek trail from Normandale all the way to Whiting Ranch on the other side of Glenn Ranch (trails in Whiting itself are closed). Had to walk a couple of very short segments and cross some water in a few spots. Got my bike dirty!

Rained all day. The utility apes have been digging up our street for almost 3 weeks now to put in the stuff to convert our street from poles to underground... so naturally, the power went out. Only off for about an hour, but when it came back on, the cable modem had a stroke and died. I'd bought that Motorola Surfboard back in 2013 from the Amazon Warehouse, so I reckon it served well. Picked up a Netgear modem at the Target for 70 bucks, and after a 30 minute hold on the phone with Spectrum, we've returned to the 20th century. Only much faster. Speed tests show the same upload and download speeds as before (maybe a little better on the upload,) but the ping is cut in half or better. Everything feels really fast. So no complaints, I guess.

Sunday is the only day in the next week we have a minimal chance of rain, so I sure hope to get in some miles tomorrow. I figure I'm gonna have to be out in the proper wet at least once in the upcoming week. Just gonna have to deal with it.

I don’t know if modems and routers get tired with age or if new tech is just better than old tech. 3 years ago speed tests and consulting with the cable people, my modem was not up to whatever spec was needed. So got a new modem, got it set up and really great up and down speed connected to the computer. Then I put my router back in the loop, download speeds dropped from 70 to 20. After a few days of uptime the router was down to about 3mbps. So got a new router. The other one had served since probably 2003 or so (wired, not WiFi). Been pretty good since. Except Cox equipment in our area doesn’t like the rain, we’ve had several recent outages.

Hey ... I'm off to California soon. Will it be warmer and drier?

And to continue last months topic; I went to look and I'm pretty sure my highest suffer score was 646 and that in only 35 miles. Mind you, there was a bit of climbing that day.

I've been arguing with spectrum on and off about my supposed download speeds (supposed to be getting 100+, only getting about 30) and they kept telling me I had to connect directly to the modem to test speeds and I thought what's the point of that, i'm only ever going to use my router anyway.

Long story short (too late!) I needed a new wireless adapter for my main computer so I could use the 5G band and get away from teh bluetooth / ANT+ frequencies and wouldn't you know it, my DL speed went all the way up to 110.

Maybe teh spectrum bobos aren't as dumb as I thought they were. There are sooooooo many devices connected to my wireless network though, yeesh.

Ah, the 2.4Ghz ISM band. Full of frequency hopping BT (whoever thought a frequency hopping protocol on a crowded shared band was a good idea), noise from flourescent lights, microwaves, zigbee, Z-Wave, and just to add to your pain there's only 3 non-overlapping channels (1,6,11) and someone near you is probably using one of those (or, worse, something else that overlaps on BOTH the clear ones around it) so you're in contention at all times. Add to that wireless is Carrier Sense Multiple Access so the band has to be idle for you to transmit to avoid a collision (as opposed to CDMA for wired) and I'm often staggered you can get ANYTHING across the 2.4G radios.

5Ghz has some issues (channels blanked for radar if you're near an airport) but even with wider channels and channel bonding you're so much better off if you can get signal at the ranges you're at. Just boosting AP power (as an acquaintaince did with WRT and some huge antennna) makes you into more of a jammer than a better source, since the data doesn't get BACK to the AP and now your cell is huge and stomping on everyone else (see CSMA vs CDMA above)

When I converted a bonus room into a couple bedrooms in 2002, I took the opportunity to pull Cat 5e wire to all bedrooms, office and family room. Home runs to a patch panel in a closet, where I also installed 110 outlets, POTS phone lines (used to use DSL) and a cable home run from there to the cable POD. My wife's and my desktops are hardwired, along with the TV, two laser printers and my VOIP office phone via an 8 port wired router. I use a separate WiFi router (DHCP turned off since the wired router is upstream and handles it) for my laptop, our phones and iPads.

Works well.

Edit - I have a friend that installed the Google Mesh home network. He needed high wifi bandwidth for his Tesla in the garage.

Today, I swapped out two of the most successful tires I've ever had the pleasure of owning-- the 700x35 Hutchinson Overides on my Ritchey. The front tire lasted a (to me) unbelievable 411 days, in which time it covered an equally amazing 5,843 miles. The rear made it just 158 days and 2,758 miles, but never had a single puncture, and the center of the carcass wore evenly down to the threads all the way around. And in my employ, that's pretty darn good for a rear tire. The were both completely flat-topped. Replaced with identical Overides, which I'm pretty sure I even bought from the same seller. May the Fickle Gods of Cycling show mercy upon me, and I have as good of fortune with this pair. My cassette is closing in on the 8,000 mark and will likely need replaced prior to 10k, same for the narrow-wide chainring, which is closing on 13,000.

Unrelated, the micro-USB port on my Hammerhead Karoo computer failed, so that's in the mail back to Hammerhead in NYC for replacement. I can't go back to the Edge 520. I hate it. So thanks to the arrival of MAP pricing and my stunning level of impatience, I rode a big loop around Ontario Airport to the REI in Rancho Cucamonga and picked up a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. Two rides with it so far, and let me tell you this: if you're looking to buy a bike computer, buy this one. It makes the Garmin Edge 520 look like a manual typewriter. The app implementation is better than any I've previously used, and the Strava integration is next-level. Sensor pairing is as simple as can be, and the thing just. plain. works. Different audio tones for different functions, the snappiest auto-pause in the history of bicycle GPS, a clearly readable screen (despite the screen being basically the same size as a 520) and what I have is finally a computer that appears to have been designed by someone who actually rides a bicycle. If there's a drawback, I haven't found it yet. I'm 100% pleased with it. Also laughing at the number of "wahoo conversion mounts" for Garmin out-fronts, when 10 seconds with a razor knife and the Bolt goes right into a Garmin quarter-turn.

are you running the Overides tubeless? I just mounted the 38c version back on my CX bike last night. BWR recon ride this weekend, given it doesn't rain again and get canceled again.

I need to find the 44t front ring that came with this thing and swap out the 50t

My divine Overides have never had their insides sullied by the presence of inner tubes. They remain tubeless, washed in the glow of Orange Seal, just as their maker intended.

First ride on the new pair today. There is an immediately noticeable reduction in rolling resistance compared to the knackered ones they replaced.

not much beats a wired run. I have a pull to the garage from the switch In my spare room — the PA220 firewall and the ESX cluster both live in there,,behind the cable modem. The Cisco 1252 is in the garage, but i ended up with powerline to my office above the garage.

Somedays, I think I might be a geek. I have a Cacti instance on one VM, my mail server on another, a DNS/DHCP server and then. Samba system that will eventually be a central auth for WPA-Enterprise on the Wi-Fi and for the windows systems. I need to add a third NUC. .plus the AP only does 802.11n, so I need to decide if I wait for AX OR ‘settle’ for A

in other news, or is raining at the RSA conference and I have no bike

gear ratio on dirt roads and trails. I’m in 50 n 1-2 gear or 34 and over 7-8. Allot of cross chaining. Not much upper end pedaling speed with these tires on this bike.

The 42T is the business, IMO. I have a 44T hanging on a peg, but vastly prefer the 42T. I do have an xD cassette though, so I have a 10T on there, which gives me the same ratio as a 50/12.

I've all but guaranteed a change in the weather, and a near-immediate stoppage to spring rains: I picked up a very-lightly used pair of Bontrager OMW insulated waterproof boots. So I'm sure it will be hot by next week.

Yeah, those were the old Darth Vader phones, the newer ones were in the nice and crowded spectrum.

It's about time to change the tires on my Cross Check. Most recent pair was Schwalbe Marathon Mondial (700x42? 45?). Previous pair was Marathon Supreme (700x50). The Supremes lasted about 8000mi before I put on the Mondials. Very disappointingly, the rear Mondial wore out I think less than 1000mi, so I put the better of the Supremes on the back and have gone probably another 1000mi that way so far.

But I'm thinking next I'll try out WTB ThickSlicks because they look cool and last long and don't cost too much, but I'm seeing no 700 widths available between 28 and 52. 52 would be cutting it really close on the 'check

I really kanked up my knee somehow - it was sore yesterday and I went for an easy ride on it anyway and today I can hardly move. Not liking this, not liking this one bit! I was going to ride OUTSIDE this weekend too!
