Dec. Goal: 135 miles, That would give me 500 miles on Strava for the year...

12/09 11.53 miles Zwift, Watopia
12/11 16 miles Zwift, London
MTD 27.53

Welcome to my Cardio Cave... 98 Cannondale R200, Kurt Kinetic Road Machine with iNride sensor, Scosche SC (seems same as Wahoo Blue SC without ANT+). Nordic Track treadmill.

Why such a late start? I'm in an AirCast boot for my ankle. Waiting for my permanent AFO brace. I had a toe partially amputated 26 Nov... 135 miles is an arbitrary number, but I think I can make it if I get serious. Subscribed to Zwift, use a laptop and 32" TV, well, I switched to a 50" now. I'm needing to knuckle down and ride...

Edit. 16 more...

Skipping tomorrow I think. Big effort, upped my FTP. Oh well.

I think I am medically cleared to ride again, but there is snow out there and it's 12 degrees. (farenheit!) Trying to decide whether to pick up a trainer or join a gym instead. I'm afraid I'll hate the trainer. And my company will reimburse some of the costs of a gym membership, but won't pay for home equipment.

There is a used trainer for sale on my local facebook market for $40. Right in my town. I could pick up speed/cadence sensors on Amazon and get on Zwift.

Well , low 40’s and wet . I was hoping this kind of weather would hold off until after the first of the year . Seems like when we do get a day I could ride , there’s alway something else going on at the same time

If I may, Look for a used Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer instead of a generic mag trainer. I tried Zwift last year with a mag trainer that was not on their list of supported classic trainers. And with just a speed and cadence sensor, they say it works, but I could never get any speed, runners were passing me!

My setup above is, an older Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. I found one for $90. First, it is quieter than the mag trainers I have. Second, the resistance changes as you work harder. The magnetic trainers only change if you change it. To the Kurt, I added the Kurt Kinetic iNride sensor. For $50. This sensor simulates a power output that is very close to readings from power meters, and gets you up and running on Zwift and Rouvy. It also gives a speed reading and somehow calculates a cadence. I haven't compared that to see if it is close or not. I am using Wahoo Blue SC speed and cadence sensors on my bikes. They work well for me. I have one that looks like the same Wahoo, but is labeled Scosche. It is Bluetooth only. But functions the same as the Wahoo units. Next sensors I buy will be the individual pods. I would suggest for trainer use, getting one to use as a cadence sensor.

I sure got wordy...

And the price dropped on the iNride sensor...

Thanks. I looked up the specs on the mag trainer and decided it probably wouldn't work. I found the user manual and the setup instructions were how to connect it to the QR on your rear wheel. I have thru axles. I'm not jury-rigging anything when it comes to my bike. I may go the gym route just to get out of the house. (I work from home) And I already have a bulky stationary bike that doesn't even work right taking up the space in the spare bedroom.; Hubby bought it for himself years ago. He used to keep it in his office and used it regularly there. He moved offices and doesn't have space for it anymore so he brought it home. He never uses it here.

49 degrees , cloudy , with the roads still wet . But I needed to stretch the legs and knees . Took it very careful especially on turns .
Took the Rockhopper out after I cut another 3/4” off the seatpost. Now I don’t need a ladder to get on it , although the first time I tried to throw the leg over to mount up, I failed . It’s been a few days since I’ve ridden.
I was hoping the sun would come out while I was riding . Didn’t make it .
Would have preferred to have waited later to ride , but have to attend a Memorial service for my brother in law later .
Tomorrow is supposed to be better , mid 50’s and sun !

Dec. Goal: 135 miles

12/09 11.53 miles Zwift, Watopia
12/11 16 miles Zwift, London
12/12 12.9 miles Zwift, Tour of London Stage 2
12/14 25.83 miles Zwift, Tour of London Stage 3 This beat me up pretty bad. The climbing was ridiculous. I gave myself 90 minutes, thinking that was enough. No. 2 hours 12 minutes... I also suffered a laptop battery died, requiring me to stop, find the charger then restart the sensors. And the heart rate monitor battery died. Meaning my speed and cadence sensor battery is not long to live either...

Next stage is a lot less, and more flat...

MTD 66.26 miles, 68.74 to go... nearly half way. Wow.

12/16 6.1 miles, Zwift Error on my part joining Stage 4, joined the A group instead of B. Double the distance, and I just wasn't prepared for that. My mistake. Stage 5 tomorrow, 22.6 miles, 1400 feet of climbing, half of that in the last 4.1km... Tomorrow night. Oi... All for a jersey in the game...

Zwift 72.36 miles, 62.64 to go...

This basically describes my set up. I got a slightly better deal on my craigs list Kinetic Road Machine, but I had to fix it.

Just to clarify a few things, for zwift all you need is the InRide sensor. It will supply speed, cadence and power info to Zwift, not perfect but good enough. If I were going to do it again I would skip the InRide and get separate cadence and speed sensors such as the Wahoo that are ANT+ compliant.

An ANT+ dongle works way better than blue tooth. I have the Wahoo Heart Rate monitor $50 which works great. Also a $30 amazon rear tire,, much quieter than a stock (road) tire.

OK my goals for December. To make zwift level 12 (just made level 10 last weekend) and complete the Everest Challenge in Zwift. I need 6000 XP for level 12 and 8441 feet of climbing for Everest. To do all of this I need to make 4 rides to the Antenna plus an additional 50 miles of riding, all this in the two weeks remaining in the month. Since Dec 1 I have ridden 185 miles, been to the Antenna 4 times and rode the Alpe once. I really feel somewhat stressed out about it but I have time off for the holidays so I'm confident that I will make it with room to spare. All of this assumes that the medical procedure I'm having on Thursday doesn't gum up the works.

BTW, riding to the Antenna or riding the Alpe are great goals for anyone to have even if future. In Zwift, the Alpe is level locked at level 12. I was able to gain entry at level 10 by signing up for a race. I would encourage anyone to do a race even if they fell that they are not ready. Worse thing that can happen is you drop out. My one and only race to date is the mentioned Alpe ride. I came very close to last place. Oh well we all have to start somewhere.

Kind of wish I'd opted for the Rock and Roll Kurt instead, still might. But, in the mean time... I previously had been using a mag trainer and the Wahoo Blue SC with my phone. And I literally just couldn't move at all in Zwift, despite the need of a speed sensor only, they claimed.

Now, after the weight loss, I changed things up. I use an ANT+ dongle on a USB extension cable, the dongle sits on the floor just in front of the rear tire, so it reads both the iNride and my Tickr ANT+ HRM. As my Wahoo Blue units are on my other bikes, the Scosche version in Bluetooth is fine. The iNride comes very close to the cadence numbers, but I can't fathom how. But the laptop sees them all with the dongle and built in BT... I MIGHT get the Wahoo cadence sensor for the trainer...

Better seat and a rocker plate are next. As the fluid trainer is quieter than the mag trainer, I'll worry about a trainer specific tire later.

I set my December goals high considering I wanted 135 for the month, and didn't start till the other day. Well. Thanks to the partial toe amputation just before Turkey day... Hoping your procedure goes well!!!

Since you are using the iNride sensor, did you mess with the trainer difficulty level? After the issues I'm having with no speed uphill, despite decent power output, I'm thinking I need to lower that. Sure, it lowers my descent speed, and I'm OK with that. I think I'm going to ride about 10 miles tonight, just because and play with that setting.
