How did you get it into such good shape — those things used to turn into rust buckets if water so much as breathed on 'em, specially the brakes.

Great looking bike (though those old brakes bring back not so happy screeching braking memories.)

Quit getting cool bikes. You make the rest of us look weak.

All I did was clean it up a little. Just a smidge of rust on the front fender ("patina"); otherwise it's pretty clean. I did have to polish the chrome some.

I did the Saturday breakfast ride this morning.

That's BFer nkfrench at the front of the pack in the pic above

We ended up in downtown Fort Worth

The young man on the right rode with us for the first time in several years. He started his riding career with us when he was 11 on a Wal-Mart Schwinn his grandma bought for him. He's now 17 and riding with the Garmin Junior team.

He said he didn't want to take his helmet off because he had a terrible case of helmet hair.

I ended up with 43 miles for the day. Everyone else was in their spandex riding geared bikes. I was in jeans, riding my fixie.

Pushing 50 yrs old, 6', 238#...was 155# in high school. Felt best at 185 and would like to get back there.
Going to road bike/mountain bike as cardio for a half marathon in 6 months.

Every single one of you who has lost weight, even 5#, is an inspiration and helps get me motivated to get off the computer and get riding. Thanks.

Cool! Just be warned... you can't *just* ride. You gotta watch what you eat, too.

Above is back at about 205#

Looking at the chart below I see I've been sub clyde 4 times in the last 6 years and typically gone back up over 200 in my busiest time of year, from August to December. Weight gain has also coincided with a few herniated disk flare ups.

This year was the first where I actually lost weight in the back half of the year. I'm now down to 198#.

Keeping it off is the real challenge. If I could only ride a lot, surf a lot, MTB a lot, paddleboard a lot etc, but the more I ride the more the neck disc gets aggravated, so it's a balancing act, and a constant battle.

In the meantime, I am making portion control, discretion, and healthier foods a permanent mission. Some times I've over-relied on exercise to burn the calories, (but I could replenish them just as quickly with an epic barbecue.)

Excellent. I gave up on weight loss for the end of the year. I'm holding steady, hope to get below 200 early next year. Goal is about 190.

st3venb, Sounds like you have a solid plan, I too am in Mesa , AZ. seems to have gotten "cold" now lol the fingerless gloves have to get replaced with full lenght finger tips now . Anyway, I am 6'1 and 315 # down from 343# in May of 2012 and looking to get back to my 195-200 # feel right weight. I ride a 1989 Trek SingleTrack steel lugged 21 spd. I got the flu in 2001 and it did havoc on my body and appearantly I had undiagnosed sleep apnea, which kinda messed with the heart and lungs and the doc put me on a crap ton of meds and o2, so now I am eating a more vegan/ vegetarian/pescaterian (sp) meals. mainly salad for the main course etc... But I get in at least 45 min. everyday which is about 6 miles slowly working towards more miles per day.

So st3venb if you want to ride someday send me a message.

keep up the good work man.

I enjoyed the photos up top there, since I visit D/FW usually once a year for one reason or another, whether a visit to NASJRB Fort Worth or other visit, but always try to make a pit stop at Angelo's. One time, my contact had me buy an extra sandwich. That must have been right before I developed a prodigious appetite, as I thought it too much food.

That night I came back to NY at 1 a.m., after a stopover in Philly, with remains of a spare brisket sandwich in my pocket — dog was waiting ... he sure appreciated what little was left of that extra sandwich. The things we give up to our best furry friends.

Amazing how that cascades, ain't it? I had flu, pneumonia and bronchitis a few times since 9/11, and the same story minus the O2 but the mild sleep apnea is under evaluation. I wonder if that didn't cause a few other issues.

You know, there's a very nice little waterfall very near there, right at one of the ends of the Trinity Trails

I think that too, the underlying sleep apnea does bad things. Once the flu hit me everthing just snowballed, funny thing my ex always wore ear pluggs and said I sounded like a freight train haha and I never thought twice about it. where is the hind sight when you need it

I haven't had your trouble, thank God, but I've been struggling with getting active again after bilateral knee replacement, blood clots, and the like. Pushing yourself is just something you have to do.

took the bike out for a 10 mile ride today and man this front spring on the brooks B190 is just in the way. Does anyone know how to modify it or able to remove that spring and put a spring under the leather like the B73 ?

It doesn't matter if you are only doing one mile or one hundred. At least you are out there doing!

The miles and speed will come, as long as you are out there at least 5 days a week.

+1 Absolutely!

You're on the bike and not on the couch. Even if you just go out and just sit on it (bet you won' t stay still!). You take it one step at a time. Well done!
