Has anyone used hCG. I used it about a year ago. I lost about 50 lbs, quite rapidly. I lost my weight in about a 2 month period. It was during the winter, so I was not too concerned about cycling. I have put all my weight back on. I am cycling more this season. I love cycling and I am using it as a means to lose weight. The only issue is when I start cycling a lot, my appetite become huge. When I was up on hCG I heard that you really weren't supposed to exercise while on it. I desperately need to lose weight, but I love to cycle also. Any suggestions? Can anyone tell me how to get my appetite under control?

Hey guys, new Clydesdale to the forums. I'm 6'00", 235. I'm making a lot of changes to my lifestyle and I realized how much running hurts my joints after over a whole year of being sedentary (I used to play tennis, power walk, and do light yoga 30 lbs and a girlfriend ago). I just got my first bike in ten years. It's vintage (almost) Raleigh Pursuit 12 speed.

I've taken it out two days so far, both were about 7-8 miles. I got a new saddle for it. I got the Serfas Hybrid RX saddle. Maybe it was because of the first day on the old seat, but my butt bones hurt like crazy. For now I'm riding on some older 27" x 1-3/8" Panaracer (no model name) street tires. I'm still trying to get used to the stem shifters, which is NOT fun trying to go uphill with my weight and not being on a bike for so long. All through my teen years I rode my bike all over the Chicago suburbs. I'm only 25 and I want to get back to having that endurance. My girlfriend and I have the dream of biking across the USA by 2012 or 2013.

I'm going to thumb through these pages about "us people," but in the meantime, any advice you could offer to help get me on the right starting track to getting in shape...

Thanks everyone!
Here's a link to a thread I started about my new bike: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...aleigh-Pursuit

Don't use it, unless you can be religious about the maintenance...it really isn't a healthy way to loose weight....It is basically a starvation diet. I tried it and gained it back

to be brutally honest it all comes down to energy in (food) vs energy out (exercise)

If you want to weigh less you either have to increase your daily exercise output or reduce your calories . or a bit of both.

I have yo-yo'd in weight for 25 years ever since switching from a manual job to a desk job and giving up smoking. Every time the weight goes back on it increases a bit more ?

There is no point in setting an unrealistic lifestyle or you'll resent both the extra exercise and not being able to eat some of the things you like from time to time.

better to be fit and healthy from regular moderate enjoyable exercise and eat reasonable portions of good quality unprocessed food and be happy than forever chase unrealistic weight loss imo

Hi everyone, and welcome new posters!

Rode my longest ride since I've gotten back on the saddle last fall. Not much compared to many of you, only a hair over 9 mi, but the last 2 were uphill (heading back home is a beast!). You better believe I hopped in the pool afterwards! (A benefit to living in central Texas is that it is pool weather fairly early on!) I've also mapped out a bike route for one of my regular errands, and hope to try it out soon.

Hi there. Never heard the term Clyde before either, except for Clyde the Glide Drexler. Just joined BF. I'm 6'1" and l've weighed 215-220 the last few years. I'm in my mid-30's and my metabolism took a nosedive on my 29th birthday. Before that I weighed 175-185 no matter what I did, ate, or drank. I've been cycling for the last few years. My longest rides are usually my commutes, 18 hilly mile each way. I don't do it every day, but feel great when I do. I have a heck of a time trying to shed the pounds. I'm trying some lo-card, no-bread, no pasta diet right now. I do feel better, but it hasn't amounted to much yet. The winter is thawing so I'm going to start my commuting again next week. Wish me luck!

Hi,
45 years old, 6'1" 250 lbs, returning to riding. Ive been riding on and off since childhood always for fun. Did a few charity rides in the past. Spent one year with no car in Turkey riding a mountain bike a few years ago. I'm back in it with a Giant defy 3 for a mount. 600 ish miles so far with no problems, nothing broken. Good to see other weight challenged folks out there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi all,
26 years old, 6' sitting at a whopping 340lbs . Luckily no seems to think I weigh that much, I believe it's because I have a lot of muscle left to turn into fat. I played college football on the D-Line. Last year of actual workout was off season in 2005. Since, I've been sitting at my computer and watching TV. Decided it's time for a change and just bought me a 26" 21-speed Schwinn Avenue hybrid from Wal-Mart on 3-15-11. I'm happy to report that I have riding every single day since buying it. I'm up to around 70 total miles on it. I am able to ride 8 miles in about 50 minutes without much fuss now. I just mapped out a 10.5 mile ride I'm hoping to complete soon. Goal for right now is to get back under 300lbs.

As for my ride, it seems to be holding up quite well. I'm a newbie to bikes with gears/speeds/cog's (not sure what I sure call them). The gears seem to get stuck in between gears and clicks often and at one point was stuck trying to shift gears. I adjusted the nobby thing on the rear shifter and it seems to have fixed it for the most part. I think they just work them selfs lose over time and needs adjusting.

I hope I don't offend you but I need to ask a beginner's question. Are you always pedaling when you shift? If so are you letting up on the pressure to the pedals when you shift?

Jethro's right - the first thing is to make sure the pedals are moving when you shift. The next thing is not to be putting a lot of torque on them while you do it.

Of course, if you're already doing those things, then your derailleur(s) may be in need of adjusting.

No offense takin, yes I always pedal when shifting and I have on occasions let up but for the most part I keep a steady spinning pace and only shift if my legs start to burn or dealing with a hill. I think it had just worked it self out of adjustment as playing with the rear cable knobby thing it seems to be much better.

Super Clydesdale?!

My name is Brian. I suppose I would be considered a Clydesdale, or maybe a Super-Clydesdale. I'm 6'0" about 350 (but I don't really look it), and I've just gotten back into biking after a 20 year hiatus (stopped when I was 10-- long story for another time). Anyway, I live in Boston, MA-- a decently bike friendly city honestly.

I just bought a Specialized Hardrock sport disc 29er a few weeks ago. I had a little trouble finding padded shorts, but tracked some down online. Helmet-- heh, my size 8 Red Sox hat barely fits me. I eventually found one that fits, and off I go.

I'm getting in better shape slowly but surely, and my wife's family all loves to bike. They rent a house on Cape Cod every summer and go to ride all week. It's my hope I can join them. I have a local park with a serious steady hill climb I ride frequently to help build up endurance. I still get saddle sore a bit, but I push through.

Any words of wisdom or tips for a really big guy like me?

Cheers,

Brian

You might want a sprung seat like a Cloud 9 (but people will caution against a gell seat)
it made my bike more comfortable esp coming off curbs etc

New guy and a Clydesdale

Hi all. Just found this site a few days ago. Thanks Tom for fully activating my account. I started riding at the beginning of the year. I'm 6'3" and started out at 386 as of Dec 2, 2010. I'm as of yesterday down 38lbs via Weight Watchers. Just got my new road bike yesterday.

Welcome, beatsrunning, and congrats on the weight loss. I too am in the WW camp - one week shy of a year for me.

May I assume that Windsor came from bikesdirect.com? How would you rate it and/or the whole experience?

I love WW. It's been a great experience this time. My wife and I are both doing it. We've done it before but this time we are sticking with it.

Yes the Windsor came from bikesdirect.com. The bike so far I love. It literally just came last night. That pic was after getting it together and a quick ride around our cul-de-sac to get used to clipping in and out of the pedals. I'm about ready to head out on another ride with my two kids as soon as I post this and have some longer rides planned for the weekend. I don't want to do any long rides until my bibs come in. They are due tomorrow. The experience was great. Bike was ordered last Thursday evening. Had shipping confirmation Friday morning. The bike actually showed up a day before it was scheduled. Quality is good, and for the price I could not beat it with the same components from a LBS. Yes I won't get the "lifetime" adjustments etc, but I do have a good shop that will service the bike for me for the things that I cannot do myself. Assembly was a snap, had it un-boxed and road ready in about 45 minutes. Would I buy from them again? In a heartbeat.

I am a Clydesdale and I am new to the road.
Weighing in at at upwards of 280lbs I stand 5'6. I have been riding a MTB in the swamps here in Florida for some time. I took a year off and gained to much weight. I decided to get into the road bike thing but I had all sorts of fears at first. I could just see one of those skinny little frames bending in half as all the spokes bent in half but then I came across this forum and found a little inspiration. I went out and bought a "less expensive" road bike from a local Bike store/mail company my concerns were that I wouldn't like the road bike position or the whole bending the bike in half theory. that's why I didn't want to start out spending serious cash on something I wasn't sure I would like. Well after my 20 mile ride this morning I have officially put 150 miles on my RB and I have now been converted. I'm still in relatively good physical shape I just eat way to much but I think 20 miles 3 time a week might star taking some weight off. I plan on upgrading in the next 6 months to a year and Im looking for suggestions. I Currently have a Vilano R/T and I'm thinking maybe a felt F95 or Cdale Synapse.

Smoking, Drinking, and other bad things.

I quit smoking about 2 years ago, and my weight ballooned to about 225 from 190. I am 6' and broad with very strong legs. Track in high school, high jump etc.

I have since started smoking again, and stopped (26 times last year, and 7 times this year). I have called a truce, and continue this yoyo of smoking, not smoking.

Anyhow I hit the bike late last year, after a hiatus of about 7 years. Previously I commuted about 40 miles a day and rode MTB on the weekends for about 60 - 80 miles.

I digress, bought a new cyclocross about a month ago, have since put 750km on it the first month. Yes it was hard. Hard to find time to ride while finding time for my family. I sneak in 4 hours on Saturday morning and a couple on Sunday, plus any opportunity I can get.

Amazingly, I have gained weight, a couple of pounds...which floored me. Face has gone from chubby to sleek, legs not much different, but the gut (beer+wine) is nearly gone. Looking in the mirror, I like, more importantly, so does the wife.

I am a chef by training, so have always ate very well (nutritious, balanced, etc.).

To you even bigger guys out there, just keep at it, it takes months. The first time I climbed a mountain I had to stop five times, and the entire ride I felt like I wanted to vomit. But I got to the top!

Don't give yourself a heart attack, breaks are not just for girly men. One day, you'll ride it without stopping, and smile at the top.

The next time up, you will attack the downhill...which is what us big guys rock at!

Well that and a break away against the 145lb twerp riding a carbon fiber frame...he has no chance on the flats. :-D

I like and always will use Boure Cycling (https://www.boure.com/) they will custom make any of there shorts, bibs, jerseys, knickers, jackets ETC…. they are all hand made in Durango Co. NOTE they do have big sizes ready also...

IF you are just starting off and do not want to spend a lot for Boure High Quality clothing, You may want to try aero tech designs (https://www.aerotechdesigns.com) Any way good luck, I hope you get to enjoy a great sport and hobby.

FYI I about two months ago I purchase a Mercier from Bikesdirect.com. I love the bike. I did have to have a friend, who is quite skilled, adjust the derailleur's and such. Unless a good working knowledge on bike mechanics, I would recommend taking to lbs and letting them make the necessary adjustments. I also would buy from the again. I would say I payed $400 for a bike that would sell for $900- $1000 in a lbs. I also like neuvation.com, however their bike are a tad bit out of my range at this time.

Finally got my bike

Hi,

I'd been considering buying a bike for quite some time now, But I always managed to tell myself it was too hard to get one for my size here in Poland. Turns out, it wasn't. I went down to local LBS a couple of times and after a few weeks, they managed to put together a ride for my beefy 400lbs (and dropping) frame.

It's an MTB frame with big tires, a downhill from suspension (that I can actually stiffen up enough so it doesn't fold in on me). It rides like a dream and I LOVE riding it.

When I went to the store to pick it up, I hadn't ridden a bike in literally 18 years. And it's totally true - you don't forget. I rode it home 12km from the store, which ended up being easier than I thought it would be. Since then I've been biking every day, trying to do 90 minutes around town and what have you.

Hopefully, my next bike can be something more off-the-rack. Like one of those gorgeous Kona's. Mmm...

BTW, guys, not all gals who are into cycling actually love the skinny runt types. I, myself, would prefer a nice tall "Clydesdale" guy -- say 6'4" or 6'5" -- over 220. I think it's a shame the companies that make cycles don't "get" that there are a fair number of competitive burly guys out there dying to find a smokin' road bike that isn't going to rip apart when they kick their powerhouse thighs and glutes into sprinting or hill climbing. A guy this tall who weighs under 200 looks emmaciated. The guy I've been with for some time now amazes me. He is out on these randonneur rides of 100, 200 and 300 kms and riding for something like 12-20 hours or more on some of them . . . into hours of headwinds, up huge hills, and across miles of flats where he can pick up the speed to a modified sprint. No, these are not races, but they have the propensity to build your mental focus and endurance along with your physical endurance. I only wish that I had what he has to do these, but at this time the thought of riding 19 hours pretty close to "straight" with only a few short breaks to eat a sandwhich, change a flat, etc just makes me cringe! Oh, and btw, at 5'8" and over 150 myself, I guess that means I am an "Athena" -- and freakin' proud of it since I seem to have better endurance than my tiny girlfriends who are 5'nothing and 100lbs soaking wet and are winded within the first 10 miles. I dont' get to that point until I've hit 30 miles minimum, and that is with at least two or three good hill climbs of 2-4miles with a 6-8% grade. My long days are now up to 100 miles; I just don't ride long days here in Portland when it's still so rainy so that will have to wait a little longer. However, I'm in good enough shape to tackle them already if I want to :-) I guess my point in this post is not to measure fitness by weight alone. My BF and I are both very healthy -- eat a balanced diet, limit sweet and caffeine, drink moderately (well, ok, sometimes we slide on that one but not that often!) and cycle A LOT and yet neither of us have these super skinny bodies that the media would have one beleive is the ideal body to achieve all things good. Hogwash! Strong-thighed people unite! We have a place of honor on this planet too!

IF you are just starting off and do not want to spend a lot for Boure High Quality clothing, You may want to try aero tech designs (https://www.aerotechdesigns.com) Any way good luck, I hope you get to enjoy a great sport and hobby.
I bought shorts from Aerotech. I'll definitely check out Boure, too! Thanks for the tips!
