I think I belong in this forum as I too began cycling as a way to loose weight. I bought my bike at the beginning of May and so far have logged a couple hundred miles. My weight was 243lbs when I began and has dropped to 239lbs this morning. Is this a good rate? Trying to get down to 190 or 195. I'm 6' 2 3/4".

I've still not figured out how to do it, other than by using a third-party image hosting website and copying and pasting the IMG code. But that seems to work OK for me.

Looks to me like if you lost another 30lbs, there will not be much left of you. How tall are you?

5'-10"

Itchhhh 06-17-11 03:48 PM

Being the same height and perhaps age, I think another 30lbs would be over the top. Personally I'm shooting for 180. How long did it take you to lose 91lbs?

Haku 06-17-11 04:00 PM

I am 5'10 also, but I think that guy is hitting on you so I will back on out....

Who is hitting on who? I am 5'10 and my doc says I need to get down to 175, and I was a toothpick at that weight.

Some seriously great work here, folks. Congratulations to all, and keep it up.

As far as my goal weight is concerned, I discussed it at length with my doctor, and we agreed on 165-170. He says that's at the high end of appropriate weights for my height and body type (5'-10" and fairly broad of build). I don't know if it's entirely practical, but I do know that at 194 I still have a lot of flab around my torso and a few other places (see the paunch in the pic below), and it should come off with continued work. It may be that 175-180 is a more sustainable weight, and when I get there, if I find that to be true, I'll adjust my sights accordingly. But for now, the goal remains 165 nekked, or 170 clothed at WW.

My weight loss has gone in two stages. The first was working on my own, and over a period of 3 or 4 years I got from 304 down to 250-ish, but then it started to creep back up. When it hit 270 in April of '10, my wife and I started WW, so that 75+ has taken me about 15 months. It would have gone more quickly, but I've had a couple of plateaus of my own making.

Hey Marcus...how long of a commute by car versus the commute by bike?

All I did was run 4 days a week, ride every day (commute to work, 7 mile round trip), commute everywhere else, to grocery store, haircut, whatever, lift two days a week. Oh yeah and watch what I eat 6 days each week. Inspired by AHAM23 (thanks man!)

All these photos are unbelievable..literally!

Can you guys and gals get a little more specific in terms of what worked for you? How many miles? Diet?

@Mcafiero. How far and fast do your run? Are you doing these High intense workouts that you’ve mentioned in other threads?
What does your diet consists of? Are you avoiding starches (Rice, White Bread, Potatoes etc)? Are you doing 6 times a day or 3 meals? Not eating after 7 pm etc?

I went from 245 to 215 but have been steady at 215 for some time now. I ride a fair amount but I still eat alot of sweets. Alchohol, tabacco and other things were easy to give up compared to cookies, chocolate and ice cream I still have a big weakness there.

I've heard if you bike 150 miles a week you can eat whatever you want (in moderation of course). Am I wrong or does it seem that once you hit the 100 Mile a week plateau is where you start shedding some real weight?
Currently I'm doing 60-70 miles a week but I'm still eating sweets and it seems to be a wash.

I'm just curious as to specifics you all think are important when it comes to shedding the excess pounds.

Right now I look exactly like Mcafiero in picture one at 215lbs. I would love to get down to 185 lbs before my high school reunion next year!

This thread is totally inspiring and congratulations all of you.

CraigB 06-26-11 07:21 PM

150 miles a week isn't going to allow you to eat anything you want. It'll help a lot, but you need to ride at the level of a pro tour rider to do that, assuming you mean "eating whatever you want" literally. You're still going to have to restrict your intake to some degree if you want to lose at an appreciable rate.
