Spin Class Pain

Hey guys

I have been doing a spin class for the past 3 weeks (every Wed AM and Saturday), and it is a great thing. I wish I would have found out about this earlier. It is totally building up my legs and the fact that I can wear my spin shoes is only a plus in my mind.

That being said, my left knee is hurting moreso than it has ever in the past. I injured it in high school, but this is probably the worse it has ever felt. nI may be over exagerating a bit, but it hurt to the point that as part of my workout routine after a I run (3 miles) I do my leg workout. I went to squat and it felt as if the inside of my knee was going to burst (it just felt weaker and very sore). I couldn't squat, but could do the remaining leg exercises (press, curl, extension, and calf).

Is this just growing pains, or attributed to me not being on my custom fitted road bike?, or should I be freaking out? I can still run, and do not experience discomfort, its just when I go to squat etc.... Typically aggrevated after a spin class.

I may be looking at the obvious, but do not want to give up the spin class, as I am totally hooked and see it benefiting me when I get back out there in the spring (no winter riding for me).

Anyone else experience this? I am hoping that its tendonidus (spelling?), and nothing a few Advil could not take care of.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I pretty much have the same story. Before I started biking again, I used spin class as a way to build up my legs and get some cardio work done so I could ride for more than 5 miles without dying. I did great for a while, and I started cycling again.

One day, I was going really hard in spin class and tweaked something in my left knee. For the next few weeks I could barely do a class without the knee acting up, though I was able to ride without pain I finally gave up on spin class and put my bike on a trainer at home. No problems with that either.

It's been about 5 months of 200- 300 outdoor mile months and I'm finally able to get back to spin class (though I really dont like them now).

It's too late, but too try and make a long story short. My fit was all wrong on the spin bike. I went and got a pro fit on my road bike, and didn't have a problem. When I tried to mimic that position on the spin bike, I had been riding with the seat WAY to low and the seat WAY too far back. I wound up raising the seat 2-3 inches up and about 1 inch forward.

The problem with spin class is all the mashing that goes on when you're pushing hard with high resistance. If you're in a bad fit position, it really puts strain on your knee.

Careful with that knee, I wound up taking 3 weeks off heavy knee stress, no climbing, no spin class, no lifting, just light spinning on the trainer and outdoors.

+1 on this. I was riding a stationary at the YMCA when I first started and then switched to a bike that was fit to me. Tried to ride a stationary when the weather was bad for more than a couple of days and would hurt more after an hour than if I had ridden for 2 hours in a 10 mph head wind. You've been spoiled with proper fit. :D

Thanks for the feedback guys, this is what I thought. I will give it a go one alst time this Wed, and if I feel like complete arse, I am out. No use agonizing in pain, I can make this up in the summer, although I enjoy the climbing simulation, as that is better than anything I can get in Chicago.......

I popped a few advil tonight, and I feel better. I am in my early 30'a and my buddy told me its probably indication od tendonidus..... that is so sad if it is..... getting old blows =)

I've been experiencing some pain in my knee lately as well. I took about a month off after a series of unfortunate events, and since I started back my right knee seems to have gotten tweaked. I am experimenting with different seat elevations to see if that is the culprit. Perhaps your spinner class seat isn't at the proper height?

Take some measurements from your road bike (saddle to pedal height and front to back, saddle to bars) and use that to start with. Compare where the knee is with the pedal on the road bike to adjust the saddle back and forth on the spinner. Also, don't listen if the instructor tells you to turn the resistance way up and cadence way down. That is really tough on the knees.

I did my spin class today, and it was fine. I have some discomfort but not nearly as much as I previously experienced. I ice'd and took advil and seem night and day better.

The reason why I posted is that I consider myself to be in decent shape running everyother day etc, and weightlifting. Doing the bike and having pain was a completely new experience for me, so thanks to all for replying and coacing me through this! You guys rock!

I can't wait for it to get warmer out.
