Helmet for a big 'ole head?

I have a tough time finding hats and helmets that fit my head. Any sources for extra large helmets? I have an old Giro that fits but is getting kinda worn out and the new Giros that I've tried don't fit. I tried a Bell that was an XL and it was a near miss.

That's a very good question. XL Giros used to fit me too, but this year I discovered that the new models did not. Fortunately for me, Bell XLs, which previously did not fit just barely do now. The same company owns both Bell and Giro, and they seem to have fiddled with both the sizing and head shape for both brands, although the both claim to fit up to 24.75".

I have talked to more than a few people with the same problem, so I don't understand why helmet manufacturers don't recognize the special needs of those of us with giant brains.

I bought a Trek model last year. My bucket is 7 3/4".

It was a Trek Interval XL: Available Size(s):XL 23 1/2 - 26 60-66cm

Try the Giro Atlas II, it is significantly larger than an XL in the rest of the Giro line. I tried every other brand I could find before happening upon this one. The first time I put one on my head the band was adjusted to the largest size and it dropped right down to my ears!

By the way, if you ever need a full face helmet the XL 661 and the Mace Paak 9 were the only ones I could find that fit.

I wear a 7-7/8 or 8 hat, and a Bell XL just barely fits me. Giros never have. Bell used to make (and may still; I just haven't seen one in awhile) one model of a REALLY big helmet, up to about 8-1/2. You had to special order it...Can't remember the name. I'm thinking Bell Magnum, but that may have been a motorcycle helmet.

My husband and I both use Limars. My head is big (runs in my side of the family) but husband's is bigger. And it's got a big dome, so to speak, so he not only needs large circumference-wise, bu deep too. They work for us.

I used to have a Giro Hammerhead SC. The bucket fit fine, but I replaced the straps with a longer length of climber's webbing because I couldn't buckle it under my ginormous head. Finally it got old enough that I felt it was time to replace it, and I had a tough time finding a helmet that fit.
They were either too tight around, or the retention system in the back was uncomfortable. The Bell Citi ended up being my solution. It's big enough around and the rear adjustable retention system doesn't cut into the back of my neck when I'm riding.
The only drawback is that it has a very high "Spaceballs" or "black plastic afro" factor. Low-profile it ain't.

I have a big lid (7 3/4") and have had the same problem you had. I found a XL Giro(not sure of the model) that fit great, while other XL Giro's did not fit at all. It is just a matter of trying as many helmets as you can find. Good luck.

The Bell web site list some "King Size Helmets"

Thanks for this thread! I have been wedging a S-works on my head the last two years and I think I am ready for something different...I make the thing look like a yamika LOL!

Too bad those Bell's are so ugly...but who cares if they are comfortable right?

I think that all helmets are ugly. For me it's just fit and function.

Cratoni Radon, Lazer Big Devil, Limar Big One, and Vigor Sequel are all available in size XXL.
The Bell Triton is "a good looking helmet for the extra large of head!"

Limar's website is famous or infamous for showing lots of bikini clad women who offer "testimonials."

Triton is the Bell that was a near miss. Maybe it was an XL - that website shows them up to XXXL. There is some awesome info here - thanks to all for your help.

Mike.

see prior discussion at http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ight=89quattro

Bell Triton is cheap and BIG - I wear a size 8 1/2 long oval hat, and the triton fits fine.
