Interesting news piece about diet soda, caffeine, and health risks...

An ABC News video that I found on Yahoo:

https://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/play...61492&src=news

This probably isn't news to most of us, but it turns out that those zero calorie soda's may not be so good for us after all. Personally, I kicked diet soda a few months ago - water's better after working out anyway.

After being a diet soda drinker for many years about 5 months ago I stopped drinking it, I have felt better and my endurance has improved. But dang if it the taste of water all the time just isn't bland .

I can't stand the taste of diet soda. This just gives me another reason to not drink them. RacerDad, if water is getting boring, add in a little something to give it some flavor, but not so many calories. When I plan to be out for a while I'll often add in a bit of powdered Gatorade or something just to add some variety.

I haven't drank caffeine if a couple years now. I rarely drink diet soda. If,on the rare occasion, I want a soda, I usually just have a regular one.

At the fountain, I will mix 2/3's diet and 1/3 fully loaded for flavor. I don't need the extra calories yet. In cans, I go for diet Dr. Pepper.

The better half and I have been trying to break our addiction as well. We were going through a 12 pack of Diet Mt Dew pretty much daily, and it just got out of hand. We're now down to basically none, except for "special occasions" (i.e. going out to eat or something) and I can't say I'm worse off. Two years ago I kicked caffeine completely for several months, felt GREAT, but my hectic lifestyle doesn't play well with that.

Now I have two cups of coffee in the morning, and pretty much use that to get me through the day. Oh, and like 500 ounces of water (some days, seriously!). I have flavor packets that I throw in the water on occasiona, but I'm essentially a water addict.

I have been pretty much caffeine free most of my life. Had coffee for about two months back in college and some soda later on, but I am just about 100% water now. (I am just allowing myself some stevia enhanced electrolyte water on long rides and coconut water afterwards.)

I love my Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus - it's probably about as bad as diet soda though.

I can't put that stuff down! I have one on my desk right now and a 12-pack in the 'fridge here at work...
I also like the mixed berry version...YUM!

I drink lots of the flavored waters and plenty of Gatorade. Soda is a no-no for me.....Mountain Dew was the one that put me over the top.....kept having nightmares so I stopped cold turkey.

I tried the diet whatever once and never again. That aftertaste of that sugar replacement tastes so gross I don't want to taste that ever again.
I normally go for water from the fridge door or organic milk. The difference between organic milk and the "normal" milk is like night and day.

And the difference between organic milk and no milk at all is even greater....

Sorry, I'll go back into my animal rights activist hole...

Organic milk, oh man, it's the goods. I can't get enough of it.. that stuff is great.

However, with kids pure economics warrant store-brand skim. Oh well!

That is true... but I have to change my ways slowly. I can't give up my cereal just yet. It tastes too darn good.

The only thing I ever quit cold turkey was smoking.

Bran flakes with splenda. Once I got used to 'em, they were enough for me to forego Tony The Tiger and the Cap'n

I have Kellogs Corn Flakes with fresh strawberries, blueberries and banana mixed in. And a teaspoon of honey to sweeten it. Yum yum yum.

Vanilla soy milk is actually pretty good in cereal. And it's JoeMetal approved!

I used to drink at least a 6 pack and usually much more diet soda a day. Then I began reading how artificial sweetners were worse for me than the sugar. I switched to seltzer water about 5 years ago and now try to drink unflavored to cut down on artificial flavors. Figured I lost way too many brain cells during my partying days, didn't want to precipitate greater damage than has already been done!

I'm somewhat lactose intolerant, so soy milk should be a solution, but anything made from beans brings problems of its own.

Perrier here, I love that stuff. And I also am a moderately heavy user of low sodium V-8 with a dash of worcestershire and a dash of tobasco.

I don't like soy milk, but I use Almond milk and occationally rice milk. They are different so if you want to adjust just go without any dairy for a few weeks and when you suddenly have cereal again with almond milk your body is so glad to have it again it will accept anything! lol

I've drank Lactaid before and it tastes pretty good....not sure where that fits in the whole soy milk situation, but I know that since I'm L/I also, it is a good alternative....

I'm not a huge fan of soy milk either. You should give rice milk a try. When I came off milk, I switched right to rice milk and couldn't tell a difference between rice milk and skim milk when it was in cereal or whatever. Of course, I never drank just straight milk, so I can't compare them directly like that.
